Newly appointed Roman provincial governor Coponius takes his new seat in the distant land of Judaea. The desert is hot, and tensions run high. Coponius assumes his new post in the wake of a brutal campaign by the infamous Roman statesman Publius Varus, who left a tumultuous region behind for Coponius to govern.

Local magistrates come and beseech Coponius for assistance in restoring order in Jerusalem - a precocious woman is challenging their patriachal rule in the city. He agrees to travel to the city and render judgement against the woman, and the locals gift him a large sum in return for his help.

The night before his departure for Jerusalem, Coponius indulges himself in wine, whores, and sex. For one of the whores, the night would change her life.
