Welcome, Chris Cox!
As part of our Welcome Series, we sat down with Chris Cox to talk about their products and creative process, Make sure to check out their catalog here!
1. For those who may be discovering your work for the first time, can you tell us a little about yourself and how you first got started creating 3D content?
I’m basically a California guy living in New York. I’ve been dabbling in 3D stuff since the 90s but got focused on it in 2019.
2. Your CGbytes catalog includes a variety of clothing and accessories for Genesis 8 Female. What originally drew you toward creating 3D clothing, and what do you enjoy most about that part of the creative process?
I’ve had been using Poser the migrated to Daz and just wanted to make my own clothing a stuff.
3. Some of the products currently available in your CGbytes catalog represent work from earlier in your career. Looking back at those projects, how do you feel your skills, workflow, or approach to creating content have evolved since then?
I just continue to refine the workflow and that with continued practice makes the process smother and faster.
4. When you're starting a new product, where does the idea usually begin for you? Is it a particular piece of clothing, a visual concept, a technical challenge, or something else entirely?
I typically start with a vague idea such as Clubwear or Fantasy Outfit then just start doing image searches for inspiration to refine what I would like to do
5. Creating commercial 3D content requires balancing creativity with practicality. What are some of the things you have to consider when designing a product that users will actually need to install, use, pose, and render?
Generally, for product I try and figure out what would take a week or less to make
6. One thing that makes your creative process a little different is that you share a large portion of it live on Twitch and YouTube with your community. What made you decide to start streaming while you work on your 3D projects?
I started watching Twitch back in 2019, mostly music streamers, and that inspired me to stream making 3D things, was a good excuse to work on making 3D stuff regularly
7. Your streams aren't strictly tutorials, but viewers often get the opportunity to ask questions about what you're working on, and sometimes those conversations can turn into demonstrations or learning moments. Did that interactive side of streaming develop naturally, or was that always something you hoped to encourage?
The interactive part is the reason for streaming, otherwise I could make 3D stuff without streaming
8. Has streaming your workflow changed the way you approach your own work at all? Do you find that explaining what you're doing to someone else, or answering questions as you work, ever makes you look at your own process differently?
Because I have basically been streaming while developing my Workflow, I don’t have a baseline for what would be different without streaming. However, occasionally someone will offer a tip that is useful while streaming that I may otherwise not have gotten.
9. In addition to your creative streams, you host Saturday Night Social, where members of your Discord Community can share their artwork during the Art Share portion of the stream and join in on a more relaxed conversation with other artists and guests. What inspired you to create that kind of space for artists to share their work?
I can’t recall the actual reason for having a Saturday Night Social, but I feel Saturday Nights should be a little special and something to look forward to.
10. What advice would you give to someone who is interested in creating their own commercial 3D content but isn't sure where to begin?
I can only speak about making Daz Studio products. If you have a Daz Studio product, install it into a clean directory and see how things are set up. Find a Forum of Discord server where people who know how to do this are so you can ask questions. Ask questions that can be answered with a short answer vs needing an answer that is basically complete user manual (remember when those were a thing?)
11. Looking ahead, what kinds of products, projects, or creative goals are you most excited to explore next?
The foreseeable future includes making more clothes for Daz Studio along with making sets the can be use in Daz Studio as well as set up for use outside of Daz Studio
Quick Fire Round!
Coffee or tea?
Coffee
Early bird or night owl?

What's one piece of software you couldn't live without?
A web browser
What's your favorite part of the 3D creation process?
Modeling and texturing
One piece of advice you wish someone had given you when you first started?
Knowing the standards for making Daz Studio products from the beginning would have been good
What's currently inspiring you creatively?
