1) what brought you into 3D erotica?
The fascination for the ladies, for story telling and for the sexual excitement between the two.
2) How did you discover Renderotica?
Back in 2010 or 2011 I was making a small videoclip for a friend of mine and came across Renderotica when I was looking for some answer to a 3D problem. I think I had seen it before but never properly realised what it was.
3) How did you choose your nickname?
I wanted something that was easy to remember, but at the same time representing what I do. I also considered Professor Perv... but hmm
4) How long have you been creating your artwork?
Since I was born, but Poser wasn't invented on time...
5) Where do you draw your inspirations from?
Girls, girlfriends, ex-girlfriends, fuck-buddies, parties, flirting, chatting, getting drunk, real life experiences, books, movies, getting chased by elephants, rhinos or lions, shooting fully-automatic weapons at unsuspecting beer cans, tattered jeans, diesel fumes, rainy seasons, African mountains, flat tyres, getting hopelessly stuck in the mud, driving a 30 year old land rover without brakes or doors, strangers, cigars, Islay single malts, potholes, beer, beer, and more beer, beach parties, skinny dipping, loud-ass trance, gossip, fresh fish, barbeques, camp fires, etc, etc... but also Astrix, Tintin, Donald Duck... Rooie Oortjes ;)
6) what are the specs of your render machine?
i5 and i7 PCs, with Poser Pro 2014 using Poser's Firefly Renderer.
7) How did you come up with Lali?
When I discovered Renderotica I emailed Diane (the manager back then) some renders of mine, asking her if I stood a chance. She said yeah, so I started playing around a bit more. It wasn't until I got in contact with Andrew that I began taking it more seriously. He suggested I make some comics. So I did... except I needed a main character. I wanted a believable girl, but at the same time someone that has some of the attributes of a fantasy babe: big tits for example. I partly based her on two of my girlfriends, both in looks and personality.
8) Did you make comics before Lali?
Not really, I did always like comics and wanted to make them, and once when I was 12 I made a comic about some dumb Tyrannosaurus Rex that could never catch prey (like Sylvester the cat). I have written two books and have a fantasy trilogy on the way. They are currently being edited and maybe one day I can publish them. But I only began making comics after Andrew suggested I make them.
10) what is your favorite work you’ve created?
Lali :)
11) Out of all the various art mediums why 3D?
I like telling stories, especially visual ones, either with words or with pictures... and making a living in the process. I also write books, but its harder to break through in that scene. Same goes for drawing and photography. 3D is a fascinating medium that is relatively fresh and it is easier to stand out if you really make an effort. The community is also small and overseeable, an artist can build up a closer bond with his/her fans. Also, with 3D erotica, you don't have to deal with porn stars with the IQ of a doorknob, and you can inject a lot more believability into your characters, and at the same time make some very sexy scenes.
12) What are your plans With Lali for the future?
Comics, as many as I can! I currently have a whole list of stories I wanna get done, some Lali Lites (hopefully properly Lite this time) and obviously the continuation of her regular Black Desk adventures. The current plans are for the next installment of the Black Desk adventures, wherein she tells the psychiatrist about her 'First Time', with accompanying imagery off course, and two other Lali Lites. One is about the 'Disco Dragon' with Christina, and the other is about Lali investigating her Professor's secret life... which obviously goes tits up... literally
13) who are your favorite artists other than yourself?
So many, for different reasons, like Epoch, KristinF, Poison, Miro, HZR, Apocalypse, DarkSeed, Geramdrir, Gazukull, Supro, Nakedfunnz, TexBoy, Hieronymous, Madbob, Arcas (Zogg), Singular3D, Shorterbus, Nightcelt, Cempion, Fairyunfair, Nightcelt, Blackadder, Dtrieb3, Rubnbump, LM Ant, Enklebert Farnsbarns, Albert Puffenstuff, Peter Uppington, Clive Harolds, Nancy Kerslinger, Niblet Monroe, Porsil Fniffelson, Egbert Allcock, Simon Beeblewiggle, Ruby Jockminister... hmm, I might have made some of those up! But also music artists, Enigma (Michael Cretu), Dave Mustaine, some of the Dark Techno DJs.... basically anyone that makes a real effort to improve their skills for the pleasure of the fans.
14) If someone reading this wants to start creating their own artwork what words of advice would you give them?
Ahem, well, I have been getting this question a lot recently, so I've had some time to think about it hehehe. In my humble opinion, if you wanna make art, first you need to be an artist by nature; off course there are many different ways of looking at it, but for me an artist is ideally a worshipper of phenomena and tries to capture it to the best of their abilities, not to the best of the tool's abilities. An artist is someone that is not limited by the tools they use, nor are they defined by it. I made Lali's Bits because the regular V4 was crap, for example. I think an artist is someone that either sits and stares at an insect for hours, studies it, or perfects a craft, like photography, using SLR cameras, or mixes their own paints, or studies the words in the dictionary to write better stories, or tries to convey their emotions through poetry, or painting. If you've never done that before, you'll have a hard time trying to replicate the world around you. You'll be blind to the important details like that feint smile, that little strip of shadow contouring her breasts, that one remark that will make a reader laugh, the color of the evening sky, small things that make art come alive. You cannot catch something if you don't know what it looks like.
But if you are this person, and you wanna make comics, you could do it the way I do it: you'll FIRST need a goal, or an idea; then determination or will power; and only THEN you can think about pencils, paper, or maybe even software... not the other way round. Most of my comics start by me sitting miles away from the computer and jotting things down on paper. Almost everything I do first appears in my head, and I then use Poser to realise it. Software will not make art for you, its just a tool, like a pencil is. Don't get an external renderer because that's apparently the thing we need to be proper artists, that's nonsense. Compare van Gogh to Rembrandt, for example. Both made amazing stuff, but with different techniques. An external renderer won't help us make art any more than scratching our ass would. A nicely rendered pile of shit, is still a pile of shit. Only get such a renderer if it will help you realise that image in your head. Genesis is another good example, it guarantees nothing. I have seriously seen V3 renders in Poser 6 better than some Genesis renders in Reality.
But above all, make sure you make stuff that you like, entertain yourself the most, impress yourself, make it for yourself! Why? because if you cannot please or impress yourself, its unlikely you'll impress others. But at the same time don't forget that there's no such thing as perfection. A so-so render can be more fascinating than a perfectly executed render, it just depends what you're saying with it. I have seen kid's drawings more interesting than some of Michaelangelo's paintings.
15) When developing your works, what's been your most influential source for ideas?
Real life experiences and real people mostly, but sometimes also movies and books.
16) Any hints on what your next project is going to include?
A very detailed pussy, and lots of comics about it. If I have time, I also wanna make a few tutorials about using Poser and posing characters.
17) Do you have a job outside of 3D or do you consider this your full time occupation?
Full-time, although I do also write books, perform as a DJ, and do African wildlife photography as well as the odd GIS mapping job inside wildlife parks. I am actually a certified geologist, and C# .NET software developer, but I haven't done that in a while.
18) With all the recent advancements in 3D technology what excites you the most? What do you dread the most?
Poser did very well with their latest version (Poser Pro 2014) since the gadgets they developed have greatly improved my workflow. The morphing tool and the raytrace preview are two examples. Poser is the ultimate workhorse for comics: setting up scenes, posing your characters and spewing out decent quality renders at a high rate for comics, or picture series. So I am very excited about their future plans. DS seems to be picking up and its qualities as a development platform are making me more and more interested to develop Project E in it since it is capable of exporting for Poser WM, but I still struggle with their interface. I highly doubt I'll ever use it for making comics though.
What I dread the most is overrated trends that might force us in a certain direction, or force us to make a decision to either submit or stay behind, the latter making us look unwilling to change. The external renderer trend, or Genesis, for example. DAZ seem to do whatever they want in a big hurry. Granted, a lot of it is very good, but its also not always as amazing as they make it out to be, and I fear they might alienate good artists that cannot, or do not wanna keep up with them, force good software companies to change their standards, and create a simplistic image of 3D art by making it seem like anyone can do it. I am afraid to touch Genesis because even though it's a good concept (but useless for me since I use Poser and my V4 works just fine), before you know it, they'll come with something new (and not very different), and force everyone to adapt. It would be very tough for me to make a gen prop every time they do so, while also trying to make comics. So, that's why I want to develop Project E, then I can call my own shots!
19) What is the stupidest thing you've ever done? I mean very stupid!
Walk into a herd of elephants, at night!
20) Anything else you'd like to add?
The fool is not the one that does something foolish, but the one that does nothing at all.
