1) What brought you into 3D Toons?
Toons? Would never use the word “toons” to describe 3DX. I originally got into 3D CGI to create custom content for PC based games.
2) How did you choose your nickname?
It’s me. I can’t go into details,…
3) How long have you been creating your artwork?
My mother says I was born with a pencil in my hand, if that counts. I tell her that had to be very painful. So, I’ve been doing artwork of one form or another since I was basically old enough to pick up a pencil,… figure at least 48 years. There are oils on canvas I did when I was 8 still hanging on my mother’s walls back home.
3DX? Since around 2003.
4) Where do you draw your inspirations from?
All over,… mostly I do artwork connected to my fantasy world of Arrallon,… so much more interesting than the real world. I also have friends who are constantly barraging me with new character ideas, which we bat back and forth until they fit some form of logic, then naturally, they have to have character art to go with them. McAfee, Calico, you know who you are.
5) What are the specs of your render machine?
Cyberpower i7 3.2 GHz Quad processor, 6 GB SDRAM, 2x SLI cross strapped 2GB nVidia GeForce GTX cards, Win 7 Pro 64bit, 24” Asus WS HD monitor.
6) What is your favorite work you’ve created?
What I consider my favorite is irrelevant. The pieces I throw together without a second thought seem to get the most attention and the ones that I slave over get crapped on,… so I try not to get too attached.
7) Out of all the various art mediums why 3D?
Just kinda happened,… for one thing, I like the idea that if I screw it up, all I have to do is reload the project, tweak what was screwed up and start again. Beats layering oil on canvas, scrapping lead miniatures, or hauling plastic models back and forth from coast to coast.
8) What are your plans for the future?
Is there going to be a future? Having been around when we thought that the future would be colonies on Mars and 500 mph flying cars by 1990,… the future ain’t what it used to be. I try not to look past tomorrow,… too damned depressing.
9) Who are your favorite artists other than yourself?
I would never consider myself one of my favorites,… I mean,… seriously?
3D? Blackadder, Dizzydills, Gazukull, Wyrmmaster, FullyTank, Zzomp, Chimera46.
Traditional? Frank Frazetta, Louis Royo, Boris Vallejo, Julie Bell, Clyde Caldwell
10) If someone reading this wants to start creating their own artwork what words of advice would you give them?
Be independently wealthy first. If not, give it up and go get a real job. Bottom line, it’s a hobby, not a career path. If you love it and want to do it,… knock yourself out. If you think you’re gonna make a living at this, remember, there are 6 billion people on the planet and two job openings at WETA Studios. Be realistic. You might have the kind of luck that would land you in one of those few jobs, but with luck like that, you’re better off in Vegas.
11) Any hints on what your next project is going to include?
You got me,… I’m just makin’ this shit up as I go along. I’m constantly making new swords,… revising dynamic cloth objects,… and I’m building a new 6’ long tentacle/tail/cock made up of 60+ segments to give better tight bends.
12) Do you have a job outside of 3D or do you consider this your full time occupation?
Right, like I could make a living at this,…. Hahahaha. No, seriously. I’m a rocket scientist,… literally,… I build, launch and test rockets, satellites, ground control systems,… etc. Assuming the species doesn’t decide to stick its head in the sand and just stay on this rock until we get smacked by an errant asteroid or fried by a super flare, I intend to keep doing that. I’d say that’s about an even-money bet at this point.
13) With all the recent advancements in 3D technology what excites you the most? What do you dread the most?
Excites - Computers that can actually do what we only hoped they could do twenty years ago,… software that actually does what it claims it can do.
Dread – having to constantly shell out money I ain’t got to upgrade to those very same new computers and software. I dread even more software designed by morons that have no concept what a functional and intelligently designed user interface looks like. I mean really,… if I have to hold down the Alt key, F8, and cross my eyes and move the mouse in the opposite direction (all at the same time) to manipulate an object, you blew it.
