My desktop is in the shop. DAZ Studio was crashing whenever I tried to render an image. So I decided that I needed to upgrade my m-board and CPU. My mistake was trying to install them myself. My eyes are not what they used to be and I've grown clumsy with old age. I screwed up the wiring and (so is my assumption) managed to scratch the new m-board. So it went to the shop for a diagnostic that should be completed late next week. If I'm lucky, it will be no more than another new m-board.

In the meantime, I bought ia cheap HP laptop, $449 plus tax. I'm discovering that DAZ Studio doesn't sit well with Windows 11 (at least I don't think it does) Worse, laptop resolution produced data-entry screens that are exceedingly difficult to read for an aging fart like me. Happily, the store put the laptop on discount, $150 off. I today was able to get the reduced price. So, for about $350 I have computer power and access to the web. I can pay my bills online and, importantly, I know enough now to stick to Windows 10 for DAZ Studio.

Am sorry to hear your system is down - I can certainly sympathize. Bought a new desktop and it died less than 48 hours later, had to send it back and wait over a month to get it returned.

Sounds like your emergency laptop purchase mirrors my own (from another computer failure, many years ago), down to it being a cheap HP. Even ten years ago, that laptop had no real chance at running DAZ Studio (largely thanks to the i3 processor). :( Oddly enough, it's still working just fine as an ebook reader/media player.

Crossing my fingers that your desktop returns in good condition. :)

I'm sorry to hear that you're having such bad luck with all this... but trust me: Windows 11 & Daz Studio don't have to clash, if anything it's more likely for Win11 to clash with hardware than software.. For example, I have a 2nd PC which I use as a mini server but for some reason Windows 11 doesn't "like" it and thus refuses to install.

Win11 is very picky about hardware, more so than software.

Hallelujah! The shop has just confirmed that my desktop PC is working just fine. I did not scratch the new m-board after all. Everything works as it should and I can retrieve it tomorrow. The only question is whether to return the HP lap top that I bought as a stop gap. I might keep it in anticipation of future difficulties. Importantly, it seems to have a mind of its own; deleting text, shifting images, opening folders all on its own. Or so it seems. And the text is too small for a man my age to easily read. Not fun.

That's a splendid idea, ZenMaster3D, use the laptop as a mini-server, if I can get that to work. I can render on the laptop and continue working on the desktop. Or vice versa, whichever works. Great idea, if DAZ Studio works properly on Windows 11.

It's a deal! Compose on the desktop while rendering on the laptop. It saves me the cost of a new g-board for the desktop and it should be a cinch with mutually accessible USB hard drives and a capacious flash drive to transfer the files! Moreover, I've the robust and vastly under-rated Corel AfterShot Pro 3 for post work. Brilliant! Thanks to you, ZenMaster3D, I've got a new render engine for $335 bucks. I repeat, brilliant!

Things have taken a turn for the worst. My newly updated desktop will not let me log in. When I try, the screen informs me that my security settings have changed and invites me to enter a new PIN. Attempts to invariably fail. The shop failed to connect my DVD drive, so I cannot re-install my Windows 10 OS. MS instructed me to update the security information, which I did using my newly bought laptop. However, the desktop acknowledges only that the settings have changed and refuses to update the PIN.

I'm thinking that I must update to Windows 11, although MS assures me that a single user account can use PCs running Windows 10 and others running Windows 11 without issue. Perhaps that's a joke. My desktop is a paper weight! And how can I install Windows 11 on an inaccessible PC?

I'm mad as hell and have no idea what to do now. And I need a functioning desktop rather badly.

Unfortunately I can't help with that though account recovery or a reset should be doable. Really hope you'll manage to solve that.

But re-reading this thread got me wondering about something else...  keep in mind that crashes in Daz Studio don't always have to be the result of bad hardware. For example, there are some hairpieces in my library which always result in a crash during rendering if it somehow clips into other objects. That took me a while to figure out...

Stil, might be something to keep in mind.

On Friday, I bought a USB license key for Windows 11 ($190 Canadian) for my desktop. I find I cannot install it. Because I upgraded the m-board and CPU, Windows wants me to reset my PIN (the security settings were changed with the new hardware). Attempts to reset my PIN come to grief thanks to the MS verification process. I enter my MS account password and MS emails a verification code that I can use to confirm that I am who I say I am. Unhappily, I cannot access my email because I cannot log on to my desktop. (I'm writing this on my laptop) And MS does not allow me to change the delivery method of the verification code from email to cell phone. Looks like I'm screwed big time. My desktop is a paper weight and I haven't a clue what to do about it.

You can find licenses at a much lower price : mine are about 10 euros each for Win11 pro. As for MS online idiot registration, there are many many workaround available. I'm an old french guy, but I learnt quite a few tricks.

BTW, I absolutely never buy computers with a brand name. A very long time ago, HP was an absolutely reliable stuff. They are now owned by who knows who people. I own an HP printer/scanner, it's an absolute s...t. compared to my OKI for instance.

I suppose you speak french (or the more or less equivalent Canadian language ;-))  You can pm me for help if needed. One of my cousin is married to a Quebec guy.

Things are slowly getting better. I have managed to access my email. My service provider updated me from email to its web-mail service. So I found the verification code that Windows wanted to update my PIN. I can log in to my desktop at last. Unhappily, Windows 11 declines to install until I enable Secure Boot. My m-board BIOS shows no such parameter. Worse, the present Windows 10 installation refuses to activate and I cannot personalize my settings. I have no idea why MS is making life so difficult for its customers. We pay good money, it should be easy.

And my internet provider's web-mail service doesn't look promising. It works but I don't like the screens or the presentation. Frankly, I preferred my sturdy copy of Outlook 2007 which worked like a trooper and presented a more user-friendly interface.

Tomorrow, I'll take my ailing desktop to the shop once more and see if they can find the Secure Boot setting. Then at last, I'll install Windows 11.

HP is still formidable, if not quite still the best.

Internet providers are Sneaky Petes! My provider's tech support set me up with their inadequate web-mail service. A little further investigation discovered that email is still readily available and requires only a couple of steps to set up. Firchrisakes almighty! They'll palm you off with any low-tech solution to get rid of you and tell you that they're doing you a great service! Now pay us!

Slowly but surely, I am getting Windows 11 sorted. I'm installing the programs that I relied on when using Windows 10 and I may have a solution for MS Office 2007, which has joined the cemetery in the meadows. (sigh) I will try to manage with Office 365, although I do not want to pay money for it. Computers! The necessary headaches.

My desktop PC seems to be back to normal. Windows 11 is installed and working and I've installed the old programs I was using on Windows 10. I'm going to try to be more productive in the future. Retirement should not be a period of idleness.
