I'm always looking for those lower back tattoos in LIE format. They're a pain to make, as there's a materialzone/UV seam running right across the center of the back. Especially looking for a variety of those V-shaped tribals, but also stuff like catpaws, hearts (which sometimes form the centerpiece of the tribals), you name it.

Alternatively, what would work very well for me, and which might help a LOT of creators, would be an alternative UV for Genesis 3 and 8 figures. One where the seam runs on the frontside instead of the backside. How that would work? Well, correct me if I'm wrong, and this wouldn't work, but I think it would be possible to add a geoshell to the figure, then swap the UV for the geoshell with this alternative front-seam UV, and load tattoos on the geoshell instead. This should make it possible to load virtually any image onto the geoshell as a backpiece, without worry over seams or whatnot.

LIE probably isn't the best way to go there, you would have the same problem with that seam. I think I would use either a decal, if you are using IRAY, or a geoshell which doesn't have that seam problem. An example of the decals over at DAZ would be the product Iray Tattooz. On the Geoshell, you would just add the tattoo and a opacity mask so the tattoo would be on top of the skin rather than a part of it.
They make clothes for V4? Why??

Substance Painter is your friend for this type of stuff. You can do it as a shell or directly on the textures, including normal and bump mapping if wanted. Get a template cutout of your tat and make import it as a texture material on the shelf and then create a brush, you might also need to make an alpha cutout of the template. Once you have the brush you just align, scale and stamp it directly on a Geneis model import. Export textures. Done.

Which is why the other option I'd like to see, an alternative UV for the Daz figures which has the seam on the front instead of the back. I'm almost certain such a UV could be made, but I'm sadly not that good with Blender to make one myself. But with one, I could just apply that UV to a geoshell, and use any tattoo textures on that shell.

Decals work, but they're a bit finicky. It can be pretty hard to consistently get them on the exact same spot when rendering a figure from different angles.

As for substance painter and similar programs: they're all pretty expensive for the very little I would do with them. (I haven't seen any freeware yet able to paint across seams like that). I can make a tattoo in Photoshop or Gimp, that would be most of the work. I'd only need Substance Painter to apply it to a UV. It would be easier (and in the long run cheaper) to just have alternative UVs for G3 and G8 figures that don't have a seam on the back.

Finally got around to doing this with Substance Painter using projection. Then used Photo-paint to create a subtration layer at 80% onto skin. Done. But this could have been done as a shell as well.

I agree with you on some software is expensive and it depends on your own work what is important or not. I fiddle with the idea of getting Zbrush but found I can do most of that same work in Blender.  Since I create my own skins and effects, such as sweat, tan lines, sunburns, bruises, blood and the occasional tat Substance painter is a must have for me.
