So, was just intending to use some cum figures from Love Loads and Cream Cascade for the first time. However, while I'm not trying for total photorealism, I do want the cum to look reasonably like actual cum. But it just comes out (Iray, of course) looking like white plastic, or especially non-transparent white wax, and that's after applying the 40% transparency preset. Am I doing something stupid, or does anyone know of a better cum surface shader that could be applied?

I have found tweaking the 'Scattering Measurement Distance' parameter of the shader can produce a more realistic effect. I have a freebie I found some years ago that works pretty well I can send you if you want.

I've found that the freebie from Clare3DX works pretty well most of the time. It's still listed on their site. I'm not going to post a link to avoid irritating Teronsuke, but a quick google search will give it to you. It's just called cum shaders and it has several different materials in it.
