As for the site mail issue / private message,  can you reply to other messages and or create and send other messages?  
the only thing I can think of (by no means a tech guy though) maybe the user closed their account so there's no account to reply to,  OR if possible they have messages blocked?

If you can site mail me the username OR email it to me I can have a better chance at tracking down the issue and or kicking this up to our programmers.

That's bizare as all get out, and a new one for me,  by any chance are you running any ad blockers, VPN or Proxies via the PC? 
And maybe somewhat of a crazy question, do you leave the PC on 24/7 (or is that only me lol) if so, when did it last get restarted?

I ask that one cause I never shut my PC off, it's my internet, TV, communication and gaming hub so it really only shuts down in a power out, or if it starts gettng really wonky,  I've never had your exact problem of text files vanishing but I've had other very odd issues that just went away after a nice PC restart, so might be worth trying?
