Is it just me, or is Windows 11 intermittently sluggish? MS Edge, Windows Explorer, and a variety of other programs sometimes take forever to launch. Changing a filename in Windows Explorer is often an exercise in patience. And the latest MS cumulative update declines to install. Have any of you the same experience with MS's latest and greatest OS?

So... I've been in a weird situation. I upgraded my old PC to Windows 11 (from 10), but unfortunately the PSU broke down and caused too much damage. So now I'm using a temporary backup which still runs Windows 10 because it can't be upgraded due to hardware (lack of encryption support).

Well, it's my experience that Windows 11 is a lot more responsive than 10. I notice this on my PC, but also on my Surface which I upgraded to 11.

Right now I'm back on 10 but I honestly can't wait for my new PC so that I'm back on 11 again.

Thanks for yours, ZenMaster3D. Admittedly, the sluggishness is internittent. Initially, I had no such problems; Windows 11 seemed a jackrabbit. It's only in the last several days. Perrhaps if I can get that pesky update to install.

And best of luck with the new PC. New hardware is always an advance. Cheers.

I haven't noticed individual programs running slow, but I've certainly noticed that Windows 11 is taking longer to boot on my system than it used to.  If I could figure out a way to get certain Windows apps running under Linux, I'd gladly leave the latest and greatest OS behind.

Thanks for yours, jerriecan. I think I've found what seems a viable solution. I uninstalled both Norton Antivirus 360 and Norton Utilties Ultimate. A few web sites I visited argued that these programs extensively monitor almost everything doing on a PC, hence the sluggish starts, launches, and shut downs.  I'm depending on Microsoft Defender to be everything it 's said to be. A website argued that users who stay away from untrusted sites (porn and crack sites mainly I suppose) might not need all the tools in a dedicated antivirus Swiss Army Knife. I'll have to try to find ways to delete system clutter. But at the moment, Windows 11 is launching and shutting down much more promptly.

Cheers. I hope you can find a solution.

And now my PC is actively conspiring against me. Two hard drives have simply vanished. The first is my repository of software downloads, and I neglected to make a backup, and the second is my database of 3D DAZ and Poser assets (backed up at least, but presently missing). Neither drive appears after I boot the PC. I have no idea what has happened, but I've got to get them both functioning again. Installing Windows 11 has been one glorious pain in the arse after another.

I am presently discovering that Tim Horton canned soups are downright bland. Back to Campbell's ASAP! What's more! Burns Hot Dogs need all the condiments your imagination can summon: coleslaw;  finely chopped onions; mustard, French or otherwise; relish; red peppers; pickles. They don't offer flavour on their own! Old taste buds are not dead taste buds!

Their donuts aren't "always fresh" as they used to be. They were better when Dunkin' Donuts was around because they had competition. Thankfully, we have Homer's Donuts!

Hell, nothing is as good as it used to be.  Kraft Mac&Cheese is just as tasteless as the generics.  Streaming has just turned back into cable TV, only with more ads. :(

I suppose everything (overlooking wine, beer, money, and sex) has a "shelf-life." A period of genuine authenticity, distinguished by effective marketing, undeniable and superior quality, and burgeoning sales. Then, in the fullness of time, they somehow lose their way; the winning formula is altered or simply abandoned. I used to enjoy Timbits, once an excellent snack in mid-afternoon at work. And I've decided that it's time to find another internet/tv provider. I'm presently paying the same money for declining service. Tomorrow is going to be a busy day. And, yes, if I can find a Homer's Donuts here, I'll give them a try.

Cheers!

There are currently seven locations of Homers Boîte à Beignes in Quebec, and the donuts are big, delicious, and always fresh!

Good call!

Forgot to mention...  Windows 11 had one major (!) problem for me: quick boot.

Quick boot is standard and when I relied on that... all my Steam games slurred out on me. GTAO (enhanced edition) never had any issues, but as soon as I rebooted my machine: major sluggishness. It caused me tons of issues.

The things I do for titties...

Wait, wha?  Titties?  Not uncommon on a website like this, lol!  Surely I never typed that :P

Moving right along....

Quick boot can cause issues.

  • Press Win + R
  • Enter "Control" (no "").
  • Hardware & sound => power options.
  • Left area: "change on/off" buton behavior (close enough, I use a Dutch version).
  • Top option: enable changes.
  • Disable quick boot.
  • Save & enable.

Pardon the pun but: this fixed GTAO for me on Win11.

And I can't help wonder if this can't fix your issues as well, quick boot is kinda b0rked. Like having G8F run around ahead without grabbing her ... aaah, so that's why I'm thinking about titties :P

I'll go grab some coffee now :P

Thanks, casualgrapher and jerriecan, for your understanding replies. I'm an irritating old fart sometimes. Things are moving better now. I re-installed a few slow pokes; did a full Windows Firewall Virus scan; cleaned out some browser caches; and shut down the annoying and - at least to me - un-necessary OneDrive. At long last, Windows 11 is trying to behave like an adult instead of petulant adolescent.

Cheers

You're not the only one fighting their technology. I built a NAS to store all my random files on a few years ago, but didn't really know what I was doing. Turns out there's a bunch of maintenance stuff I should have been doing every week or two that I've never done. Now it's throwing an error that might mean one of the drives is dying, and doing a full test takes some eighteen hours for each drive.

The whole rig was made from an old gaming computer which had problems, so I was already worried about how long it might last before one part or another failed. So now I have to choose between keeping the janky rig I built and maybe losing everything, or shelling out 500 bucks I don't have for a proper replacement.

Oh, and OneDrive is a blight upon the computing landscape. I'll keep my files on my own hardware, thank you very much, Microsoft.

Hi Jerriecan. "Yipes!" is all I can say. Upgrade or risk losing everything. It's a tough decision to make. I bit the bullet and upgraded and now I'm on iron rations for the next few months. Sardines or biscuits and cheese for breakfast with a cup of tea, soup or a hot dog for lunch, sausage and pasta for supper. I don't even think about takeout and I'm working up to cancelling cable TV for a streaming service.

Good luck. I sincerely hope you find a workable solution.

Welp, it's bad. One of my two drives is probably failing. Looks like it's ramen and mac&cheese (Walmart store brand, of course - who can afford Kraft?) for a while. Maybe we can trade lunches every now and then. :P

I'm being an extravagant bonehead! I just spent $CDN35 on 3D assets at one web site and a further $CDN56 at another. Better than $CDN90 on bathing suits, hair, two sexy dresses, and two very cool environments without a clue when I'm going to use them in a render. I liked them enormously and I haven't bought 3D assets in quite a few months. Someday I'll grow an economical brain, just not today.

August the Sixth! And I'm sitting at my computer in sweats and shivering! Old age! And weather so unpredictable it makes you throw up your hands and curse. I'm dying for a prolonged heat wave. Not as bad as Greece right now, but please just one straight, uninterrupted week of what I used to call "summer!"

I've got a heat wave I'd gladly trade you.  95+ degrees for the forseeable future. :P  But you'd have to take the torrential evening rainstorms, too.
