I've long been super interested in making comics or stories out of my fantasies using a model that looks like me and models of guys I know. I'm not sure how to get started though. Do I teach myself 3d modeling because it's something easy enough to pick up? Do I pay an artist to make the models I want and then I can pose them the way I want once they are made? I would love to have some models I could just pose in 3d software to make my own stories but not sure where to get started. Any ideas?

Good Rig (Computer, Mainly NVIDIA GPU)

Daz3d (Free DL to Start and gauge further interest)
Genesis 8 / 8.1 Figures (Free with Daz3d)

Genesis 8 Body Morphs
Genesis 8 Face Morphs
- Face Transfer from Daz if you have photos to texture faces with.
Meipe's Genitals sets if your doing adult content.
Any required legal consent from your models for publication if publishing.

Time to hunt freebies, money and sales savy to purchase any additional items, Blender an Blender know how to create personalize items.
Serifs Affinity Photo to do post work on images and texture edits.

As of today that's pretty much the basics but this information might change 2 days from now (09/21/22 4pm MDT) after Daz makes their special announcement (G9?).

You dont necessarily need to learn how to model to do anything like what you're asking. If you get the free programs listed by TBG above, you can get morph packages that are dials you turn in order to create a character you want. Basically, within reason, (and if you are patient enough to learn) you can create a wide range of people with the tools you can get from the Daz website. There are freebies here as well and in other spots.

Personally, id get Daz Studio and learn how to load up and pose etc just to decide if its something you want to do.

Learning how to fully craft models yourself is probably going to be way to time consuming and annoying if you are just wanting to make some quick erotic art. Plus, when you get started collecting this stuff you will see that you always need another 'Set piece' or whatever, so you'll be looking around a lot. 'Man, I need a couch. Now I need a bed These textures suck! etc...' Yes, you can learn how to create your own stuff and kudos to you if you do. I sometimes make my own textures for objects, created rooms out of flat props for walls, etc... And most of the time I work the dials for my own faces.

However, unless your toons are always naked all the time you will eventually spend some money. If you want to get good genitals to use then you will definitely need to. Honestly, the cheapest way to go about getting good genitals is to just get them from this site. I cant remember if the G8 and G8.1 characters you get from daz have their genitals of not- its been a long time since I got it.

You're in the right place though if you want to get into erotic art and get some pointers from people. Good luck!

DAZ is a complex program that is very deep. You can get prepackaged characters and morphs and poses. But it is no substitution for know-how. I wouldn't want to discourage anyone, just trying to keep it real. You may want to collaborate with an established artists to generate the images you have in mind.

Not to be a buzz kill, but if you plan to use likeness of people you know, best get their permission first.

I second this. Making a character who is not a public figure requires consent. Anything else is akin to assault. I've made several figures based on real people, some are friends that want a specific fantasy realized, some are commissions. I have the commissions send me a photo of them holding up a paper that generally says "Please Bumper2, make me!" I change around the wording from person to person, and one even sent me a video. Consent is sexy.

Hi Raven,

I admire your intentions, if you have a pulse you have fantasies right.

Easy to pick up?... Yes, no, err maybe... a lot depends on your attitude to technical things and your determination to visualise those thoughts.

I would suggest DAZ Studio, it's free and you can dabble to see if you take to it before spending on content.

DS is a great tool and you can get quite impressive results in minutes right out of the box but... don't let me put you off here... if you are trying to recreate a specific subject and are particular about looks there are many things to learn.
Figures have many morphs (adjustable shapes) to dabble with and there are tools available to help create specific looks and much content such as hair styles and clothing to soak up your spare cash but if you are after very specific looks some modelling may be required, DS does not do that.
Blender is another very capable free tool but another steep learning curve.

My advice would be to dabble with DS and see what you think then, if you have the budget for it, pay someone to create the characters while you focus on learning how to pose, compose, light and render.

Creating characters though would be a challenge without photo refs, over to you how you handle that one.
I'm just here by mistake, for a friend, for science... anyway you can't prove nuffin'.
