I often find myself with "artist block" where I can't get motivated to produce anything.  I often look to line art (there's loads of it on the internet) to inspire a rendering based on the same theme.

Just wondering where others look for and find their inspiration for what they produce?  Movies, stories, celebrities, drawings?

From a vendor perspective, I do a bing image search with safety off and put my subject with the word hentai before and after it.  For example: hentai device bondage art hentai.  A ton of images will pop up, a lot of it is stuff from *delete* websites and *delete*, but I glaze over those and go for the hand art stuff.  I usually find something interesting and save it for future consideration when making a new product.

As for my art, I know what I like already but got my start when I was like, oh, 4 to 5 years old sneaking into my dads porno mag drawer. I found an issue of Playboy and saw some black and white hand drawn art from the likes of John Willy, Stanton, Eneg or some-such. Even at that early age, not even understanding what the fuck it was all about, that bondage art took hold and I knew it was "my thing".  There was one image in particular, it was a woman, gagged, with a wagon wheel around her neck and her hands tied to the spokes or rim.  That's the only image I can really remember actually, and I've never been able to find it again to say "aha- there it is!".  But, that was my original muse.

Lol, I was a perve since the beginning.

Good question! I'm suffering from "Render Block" myself. I haven't a clue why I can't get going, even though I very much want to. Is it age? Is it laziness? Is it dis-interest? Help me if you can, I'm feelin' down!

Live long and render

Finally something worthwhile to discuss

Age 10  watching old Italian made Mighty sons of Hercules series.  Lovely blonde in a skimpy toga chained in a pit with vipers in it,

a few years later the Hammer movies.... Ingrid Pitt thrown into a iron maiden and you see her eyes opened and her scream echo's about the closed room that will never be opened again

a few years later,  the news stands with the Men's Adventure pulp magazines showing some female resistance fighter being tormented my German soldiers... I began writing stories  and that is where Terri Steele began and although I was a decent pencil artist. I could never get the look I wanted

And finally a House of Milan Comic called Copperhead by Lomax and in the back a short featurette by the Bishop called Fanni Hall and thus began my quest to find a way to express myself and then suddenly at some computer show I discovered Poser 3. Yet until Poser 4 and the pro pack add-on and some guy in Japan who created Trans-mapped hair, did I venture to post  something I was proud of  Using Victoria 1

My imagination is always running at full throttle, yet my greatest problem is having my stories become stale with the same scenario told over and over.

Stay safe and well everyone

I generally look to the following for inspiration:

1.  Pulp/Men's magazine covers.  Lots of drama.

2.   HOM photos and movies from the 1970s & 80s.  More drama and lingerie.

3.   Line art drawings from Badia, Phoney, Willie/Eng, Bishop, Bill Ward, Hines, Dolcett, Thorn, Swift, Fernando and others

I generally prefer images with lots of drama/horror rather than pin-ups, genital spreads or poses w/o meaningful backgrounds.  Right now, I'm experimenting with lighting which is mostly trial and error for me.  Comics are hard for me as I lose interest and maintaining a coherent storyline (like endings or images that move the story along) is not so easy.

Right now, I'm kinda stalled for ideas/inspiration.

Most of my work is done as a stream of consciousness type thing, rarely do I go into a project with a clear idea of an image in my head, working off direct inspiration, or inspired by my muse. I would say for me closest I've had to a muse is with my photography, in the rare cases I've found a model I'm able to shoot with several times and I can feed my creativity in collaboration with the particular muse of the moment.

Most of the time with my art I just kind of load up the program, whether I'm working in Daz Studio or Poser, and start looking through the content library or Runtime. Then I'll just add things as I'm scrolling through the various categories and eventually I'll look and see that a completed idea or image is there then I'll save the scene and render.

Though I'll admit I've been in a bit of a lull lately as far as creating art is concerned. Most of the time if I have the programs opened lately it is because I'm testing items, rather than making art. (Though admittedly by chance there have been a few decent ideas/images that have come into being while I've been testing as well)

As for my muse it comes mainly from 80's 90's campy horror movies. Black/Death Metal. I got into the works of Jonzig, who does some stellar Death Metal styled covers. Music is another muse, Goth,Industrial, but being a dj since 16 has been a huge part of my being so it only makes sense it would be a muse in general. 80's sleaze rock, and modern sleaze rock. So mainly horror movies, and music for me. Plus I can put my head into some weird spaces and come up with crazy stuff.

My muse is multifaceted. *delete*, *delete*, and girls that I see out in public. That, and my very overactive imagination. I see things, and my brain creates scenarios, and off I go. That's my muse.

Vargas, Brom, Lorens, Vallejo, Parkinson, Steve Hanks, Royo, Lockwood, Manara to name just a few, throw in a bit of BDSM and lesbian fun and I can usually find some inspiration.

When I'm really blocked I get away from the computer for a few days and something will usually pop into my head.

Almost hate to admit this, but sometimes wandering around Home Depot can provide inspiration...

It's normally spur of the moment type thoughts. I'll be at my job, minding my own business and some random dirty thought will come to mind or someone will make a joke. But then I refine it in my head to decide how I could make it better in any way. This also happens when I read/watch/listen to erotica. It's nice seeing what other people have and what they can do, but sometimes you just wish that the characters had've done something else/been in a different pose or you just want to see what it would look like to take a written scene and give it an image.

For renders I usually think about a type of guy I'd like to do and go from there. I add shapes and content on the go. I am more about a portrait than a situation.

For traditional illustrations, I like to do comic styled fan art, so I basically go from a specific character and idea for it. I am more narrative with it than with renders.

I wish I could say I take inspiration in particular places, but honestly I just imagine things and build from that XD. If anything, I guess hentai animation fuels a lot of what I do, because it's fun to adapt the genre with guys instead of girls since that kind of animation doesn't exist.

I keep a folder of scrap poses, props and scenes that interest me. When I feel uninspired, I go through the folder and choose one that I want to develop. Sometimes it leads to things I like and sometimes to mediocrity. If the work goes somewhat positive, I try and use a variation of the theme that works better.

Just wondering where others look for and find their inspiration for what they produce?

It really depends on what I'm doing... when talking about making casual renders I simply go over my "WIP" category which is pretty much never empty and then I pick something which I deem the least annoying to work on (there's a reason this is 'WIP' stuff) and then... well... after messing with Daz Studio I usually get some good ideas again.

When talking about 'naughty' stuff things heavily depend. Sometimes I just go over the gallery to see what other artists managed to come up with which can give me some ideas. What also works for me is going over some demo images from products which I've either bought or which are on my wishlist, sometimes that can help as well. Davo's products are a good example for this because some of his stuff doesn't only show plain example images, some are actually quite good on their own (IMO at least) which often gives me ideas to use things "differently".

And then there's writing.... I usually ignore my blockage and just start writing anyway. Which often results in many paragraphs getting either deleted or moved away to be perfected later (or eventually deleted). But usually that gives me enough ideas again to work out. Especially because you don't need that much ideas or "directions" to come up with a good sized story (depending on your writing style).

Nice thread!

I think we all do this to a point, and it can definitely help a lot! Usually when I fall into a rut, however, I find that I've been looking for inspiration in too similar of a vein. For instance, I absolutely love the works of Roberts and Ferrera, as well as Slasher and Cagri. My 'Squad' series was closely inspired by the 'Black Van' series. But when I get render block I try to stay away from them. I frequently get stuck because I think my images are too similar, or I've done it before, and my go-to muses accentuate that.

To combat it I'll:

1) Just scroll through my Enviroments tab on Daz and pick a set at random. Then I make a picture to fit that set. It's kinda like scrawling a random line on a paper and drawing some art from it.

2) Try to make something vastly outside my comfort zone. I have dozens of these pictures, most of which will never see the light of day for their poor quality. But sometimes something great happens, or I learn a new technique.

3) I keep a list of ideas for pictures. Then I randomly pick one off the list.

4) Let it lie for a bit. Burnout is a real thing.

5) Sometimes people write me with ideas they'd like to see. I go over them and look for that spark of inspiration.

Hope this helps, and good luck! I've loved your artwork for a while, by the way!

I'll do something very similar, but I do it in the storefronts. Sometimes, just an environment scene will spark an idea. Or a vehicle.

This is true for me, as well. I have to step away from some ideas for a while, until I feel inspired again.

Like you mentioned in your original post, I also have a lot of images and stories to go along with them that will never be seen by anyone else. I like to engage in creative writing to tell a story about the images. Maybe someday, I'll actually make something with enough plot, linearity, and character development that I think someone else might enjoy it. Until then, I'll just occasionally post an image here that I think came out well.

I did that a lot when I first started rendering, especially when I looked at my work compared to some of the astounding work on here. Then one day I just started posting. Looking back at a lot of my earlier work on here I frequently see lots of problems, but it also works as record of how I've improved. No one's perfect immediately. Posting up stuff also can give you confidence to keep going!

Hmmm... Where do I get my inspiration?

The short answer is anywhere and everywhere. My imagination never stops and I'm always thinking of scenarios or stories to go with my image ideas, or vice versa. The only times I've truly run into artist block is when someone asks me to do something specific. Finding the muse for another person's idea isn't always easy.

I want to note that I'm an introvert, verging on recluse, and this holds true for my artwork as well. Sorry about that. I'm trying to share more.

Davo mentioned internet searches for images. Yes, I quiet frequently use internet searches for ideas or to refine ideas. I often browse galleries and other artist's work for inspiration.

I can also relate to Davo's statement: “As for my art, I know what I like already but got my start when I was like, oh, 4 to 5 years old sneaking into my dads porno mag drawer”. Unfortunately, nobody in my family had any interest in porno magazines, but one or two friends did sneak a few into school and share them. When I was in scouts, however, I did encounter a lady who was disposing of a large box of Penthouse magazines and other material while collecting old newspaper for recycling. While collecting her newspapers I didn't say no to the that box. We often collected old magazines with the newspapers anyway. Needless to say I kept that box of magazines. It wasn't just the monthly issues of Penthouse either. There were a few booklet collections of photo series based around a theme or story with costumes, sets, and props. Around the same time, my father owned and managed a small apartment building and I ran into similar materials when helping to clean vacated apartments. It was amazing what some people left behind, not to mention the messes. I even found Polaroids a guy had taken of his sexy girlfriend posing nude.

Davo also wrote “Lol, I was a perve since the beginning. “ Yep, same here. :-) And the finds I've listed above helped to feed and inspire the perve side of my imagination.

As Shadowman mentioned, watching old movies when I was younger certainly had an affect on my imagination. I remember some of the hammer films fondly with their buxom starlets. There were also 70's horror and action films that made an impression.

BrotherHades wrote: “Most of the time with my art I just kind of load up the program, whether I'm working in Daz Studio or Poser, and start looking through the content library or Runtime. I sometimes find myself developing an image via the same method. I'll rummage through my content folders and see what comes to mind to spark or further develop an idea.

Matt wrote: “My muse is multifaceted. *delete*, *delete*, and girls that I see out in public. That, and my very overactive imagination. I see things, and my brain creates scenarios, and off I go. That's my muse.

I can very much identify and agree with matt's statement. :-)

wurger wrote: “Vargas, Brom, Lorens, Vallejo, Parkinson, Steve Hanks, Royo, Lockwood, Manara to name just a few, throw in a bit of BDSM and lesbian fun and I can usually find some inspiration.

I'd like to add Hajime Sorayama and Olivia De Berardinis to this list!

In the end... If nothing else works, then going for a walk or hike in the woods will jump start my imagination. There is ust something about being alone in the woods.

Oh... and I just thought I'd mention I did a lot of reading in various topics, fiction and non-fiction, to feed my imagination since I was in grade school.

Whew... I'm done.
