Then your not going to look at things from any other point of view are you? Again, 3DS and Maya or even Blender. Again, as I said, don't move from Poser if you're happy in using it, regardless of how many die hard DAZ lovers are out there. My point is, for the cost and single renders use DAZ, (I don't bash) and use poser if you want to do other stuff.
For your information, I just don't use Poser (Which means I'm not a die hard fanatic)
So again, for the person keeping to Poser, use it if your happy with it!

Oh yeah! The VRam made me consider the 3090. But I can render a SubD 5 Genesis 8 with the 3080, which in terms of geometry is like having 1024 Genesis figures in the scene lol, so I'm really not needing more than that and the extra $1100 was a bit too much.

So yeah it's free in poser, but you've spent a bit for the server to set up (maybe a grand or two), and possibly another copy of poser depending on the licensing
Mmmmm. Wrong. Cost wise. It's cheaper to run multiple older machines (and the electricity) than purchasing a high end graphics card. Ever heard of auctions? Nope? It's a place where you pick up a nice little bulk farm for basically a couple of hundred dollars, then it's just setup and bingo. Cheaper, easier and way you go.
Btw you saying it's not "a very important feature" shows your lack of foresight, using a farm, it's not all about animation... sheesh!
But we're talking time. You're doing network rendering because you want your job quicker, NOT cheaper. Those networked machines are not going to be nearly effective at getting the job done than my two videocards. You have to offload that job to a dedicated network server because it's going to take hours or days to complete. Your electric bill will be HIGHER because you're running those machines for hours, compared to my seven minutes. So again it's NOT an important feature if you have the right hardware and software to get the job done. And I thank you for coming to my Ted Talk.

Wow! It IS an important feature if you're doing comics, animation, simulations... testing. I don't know who you're with, but I suggest you change suppliers for electricity, cause again - The RTX 3090 at its peak consumes around ~360 Watts. This means you need at least 720W to run it, so your total power supply should be at least 800W. Let's take on a average cost = $0.108 per hr compared to $0.035 per machine (Because I'm running a eco PSU). So, whilst you waste 7 minutes for your first render to complete, a budget farm is still cheaper without spending lots on your two high end cards. TedTalk... thanks for the offer but I think I could find better things to do...
Once again to the Poser user, if it works for you, then keep using it. Daz users, if it works for you, use it. Sheesh!

I bought a Titan RTX before the who gpu pricing went insanity crazy in 2020. Best decision ever, 24gb lets you just finally forget the vram issue. The most I've ever gotten it to is 17gb of usage. The only thing I have noticed is once you hit a certain level, you need more than 64gb of system ram to transfer the scene to render if you have iray preview also running and other programs.

Again you're matching up CPU rendering that you're getting with Firefly with GPU rendering via Iray. GPU rendering is many times faster than CPU rendering so for many things you don't need a network renderer. For the consumer space that Poser, DAZ Studio and other programs inhabits, network rendering isn't a commonly used feature. Also you moved the goalposts on your argument because NOW you're talking about network rendering for animation when you said there are other uses in previous posts.
And yes the the RTX 3090 can pull 360 watts... when it's actually being utilized as compared to a network server that stays on ALL THE TIME. So you're going to lose this comparison when my render only run that wattage for only a few minutes, or the fraction of the time on an animation that a CPU render would take. So you're doing weak arguments about my electric being high when I have two computers running all the time in my place with central a/c running all the time (since I live in Florida) and the bill I paid is only $134. Oh yeah, this computer has TWO Nvidia cards in it and a 1000 watt power supply, but the electric bill was still $134. I guess those cards are efficient at what they do and don't draw power all the time... which is why a lot of iray users don't need server farms.
Make sure you take your receipt of attendance for this Ted Talk back to your employer; you may be reimbursed for lunch.

Please don't imagine that I am suggesting that something is wrong with those who use Poser and stick to it because of their financial commitment. I intended no such thing. I merely wished to broadcast that the behaviour had caught the attention of economists and that they had derived a term to describe it. Admittedly, "fallacy" seems a pejorative term, which is unfortunate because nothing was further from my mind.
Carry on with whatever makes you happy! Everybody! Take a valium.

My electricity bill remained regularly the same $35 when I had a Mac, then a 1080TI and now with a 3080.
The rendering process ends so fast, sometimes the fans don't even get to the point of making noise, so probably the power consumption is very low now compared to my older cards.
Sometimes I do Iray animations and it's quite fast, even faster if you add the Denoise filter to the mix. Not to mention Filament and Octane are basically real-time fast. DAZ STUDIO USER SINCE 2006

V4 stuff used to work fine in DAZ but with one of their latest updates... all V4 Ik have to be deleted every time you add a V4 or IK fucks up V4 posing with translation.
Poser became a community shared process and every newbie was helped along. DAZ is completely profit driven and even their paid tutorials don't help you much. Everything's for sale. And this ideology has spread across the entire community. Sell sell sell. That's all that matters now.
DAZ could by now have developed IK like Poser that was actually useful but they don't... because it makes it easy for the user. Better instead to leave it to 3rd party vendors to create some work around and sell it.
When DAZ got the IRAY license they pretty much completely dumped 3delight support and all vendors moved immediately to IRAY... when 3delight is a very powerful render engine. But not as quickly profitable as IRAY. IRAY demands you spend money on an nvidia and ONLY an nvidia graphics card that can render quickly or you're basically fucked.
When DAZ started the Genesis characters they offered it as a character who could be male and female. But holy shit... they discovered they screwed themselves out of profits and quickly went back to male and female only characters with genesis 2 and onward.
They could make each genesis character multi-gendered but they don't... because profits.
Poser has fantastic materials but is limited to V4 and many V4 supporting stores have faded and the big stores that remain are deleting their v4 content more and more. But still, if you don't have the money to buy a cadillac computer to handle IRAY, then V4 in Poser is perfectly fine. I've seen artists make V4 renders 10+n years ago that, with postwork magic, look better than the default IRAY renders.
Photorealism doesn't mean better. It means... that shitty expression stands out. That shitty pose stands out. The realistic shadows cover the eyes so you can see where the character's looking. The render looks great but the hair looks fake or weird. Photorealism brings with it a ton of new challanges because REAL people are not symmetrical and the human eye can tell it's fake even more because it the shadows look real. To make photorealism look real you have to add fakes to trick the eye.
So, Poser is absolutely fine. I've seen folks in 2001 make photorealistic art with Poser 3... with photoshop magic.

I really do waffle between Poser and DS. I sometimes have to open up DS to see if something fits genesis 8 or make a genesis 8 morph. Other than that, I have to say, being an old dog, it's hard to learn new tricks. Right off the bat, DS has an interface that's difficult for me to understand coming from a poser background. The DS library options are way more than I'd like apparently. Poser has this "here's the fucking library, love it or leave it".
I like Posers firefly render engine. I don't even bother with the superfly. I have seen some Iray renders and the little microdot artifacts that are left when you stop your render because apparently 50 hours has been enough (sarcasm) is quite distracting. I also like posers toon out line after-render feature, it's a must have.
Also, DS figure manipulation is troublesome for me. In Poser I can just grab a body part with the pointer and move it easily, it bends and rotates in all directions. DS does not seem to have this feature unless it pulls the entire body with it. There might be a work around or way to do it, I don't know.
That being said, I am very jealous of the figures that DS has. The bending, genitals and way that clothing just seems to work when rescaling a figure is way ahead of poser. Poser you have to do a lot of "copy morphs" and crap like that and even then it's a crap-shoot. Sooo, as you see, most of my figures are ... uh... nekkid, lol.
Finister hit it right on the head with the photo real issue of non-continuity between figure and hair and symmetry. I've never been able to articulate it like that.
I've seen some great DS renders and Poser renders. Everybody knows my stance on photo-real, so for me, Poser is just fine. One day, I might make the switch, who knows.
My main issue with Poser at the moment is it's lack of a free version to compete with Daz Studio.

There's a lot of uninformed stuff in your post!
"They could make each genesis character multi-gendered but they don't... because profits." - no because the vendors had trouble making clothing like dresses because the base character didn't have breasts, so it was a lot of unnecessary trial and error. Separating the genders brought back the more sexy clothing people buy instead of the the mostly unisex clothing that was made with the first genesis.
" DAZ is completely profit driven' - Every company is profit driven otherwise employees can't be paid! Smith Micro was profit driven too, and couldn't make it off of Poser so they sold it.
See what I mean? Seriously, it's been over a decade.. let it go!

So what. This is not a matter of the software, you're using. this is a matter of your skills.

Yes, just go to the Rendo gallery and show me.
Check out the DAZ gallery next to the Poser gallery. Just let People decide.

I have never seen that. Where?
Erogenesis, Kunimasa (A.K.A. Minefujiko), and Eclesi4stik used Poser to great effect. Admittedly, the last two have switched to DAZ Studio, but Erogenesis is still producing top notch, indeed expert, renders using Poser.
I do see your point, of course. Iray renders do at a glance seem better informed that those produced by Firefly and Superfly. And Erogenesis doesn't use V4; he developed what he calls "Erogirl," his own character mesh, which he continually improves.
My point? Poser renders can equal and even surpass Iray renders, but it seems - at least to me - to require the technical command of an expert. With all due respect to kunimasa and Eclesi4stick whose Poser skills are manifest, artists of more limited skills and more modest accomplishment (I do mean me and me alone) switch to DAZ Studio. And I underline that, although kunimasa is silent on the matter, Eclesi4stik has bluntly stated that the superiority of the Genesis mesh over V4 prompted his decision to change tools.
Finally, woe is me! I forgot to mention the super-talented Marcopol, whose gallery of art-inspired Poser renders appears at another web site whose name begins with the letter "r." Edited by user Friday, August 20, 2021 10:23:25 PM(UTC)

I'll never understand this mentallity that DAZ should be administrated by charity nuns.
Of course DAZ is profit driven, like any normal company. That's why they are still in business and DAZ Studio is strong. They still give you the best software, render engines and figures available to our community for free in a world where most softwares require an expensive subscription.
"R" is also profit driven, that's why Poser and its bad figures are paid and expensive. Smith Micro was also profit driven, that's why they sold Poser to "R" when it stopped being profitable.
Yes, postworked images from old engines are capable of looking good. With less effort than that you could also adjust the Iray shaders for 3Dlight, if you really don't want to use Iray. However, you don't need an Nvidia card to use Iray. I used a Mac for years with Iray and it was totally fine.
In any case, Iray/3Delight support is dictated by the users, not DAZ. Why would I as a vendor waste my job time and hurt my income by supporting an engine that almost no one (including me) uses anymore?
Some are capable of doing hyperrealism with a pen. But there are good reasons not everyone does. That doesn't mean there's anything wrong with the pen, it's just not what people do.
The reason for the gender split since Genesis 2 was already explained. As a user, I loved the concept of the multi-gender Genesis, and Genesis was a very profitable figure, but in the practice, it was cumbersome to keep it in the next generations. As a content creator I am happy I don't have to deal with that now.
3D technology advances and improves. Ignoring that is what killed Poser in the first place. Edited by user Saturday, August 21, 2021 6:26:40 AM(UTC)

your analogy is incorrect, for it is not about a "look, my software is better" thing.
It is not, that I am all happy with DS. There are in fact so many things, I like them to address.
I just want my software to progress and when it comes to its technology, I hate nostalgia.
DS makes a least baby steps, but Poser seems to be lost in stagnation.
E.G.: When I still today have to use Photoshop to paint over my figures joints, I know this software is a fail. That's a daily routine working with Poser.
And besides:
I just don't want to feel betrayed and let down by a software company.
Bullet physics
GoZ
Cycles Renderer
They put all those free assets in Poser and let you pay for it.
They start with stock figures, that are super ugly and poorly and sloppy rigged.
The update from P 2014 to P 11 was so poor.
Hardly anything new with a new release for 99$
The update from P11 to P12 was nothing but fixing some Superfly render features?
Really? WTF?
And yes, everybody will make his own decisions, which software works best for him, and that is o.k.
This is just how I think of Poser, and I had this love-hate relationship with Poser long before DAZ Studio hit the scene.
The only good things in Poser, that I miss so badly in DAZ Studio are
the morph brush,
the graphic Dependency Editor
and
morphing with subdivisions.
oh wait, with a right click, I can easily split a morph into a right and a left morph.
Those are the things, where Poser shines.

Look I get it Smith Micro finally gave up and found a scape goat and they did not fare too much better than to take La Femme under it's wing.
I purchased every version of Poser except the latest and P-11 was not that much of an improvement. I have no clue what P-12 has as I do not and will not own it..
I used pro 14 ttp get my comic renders done, go to post work and skillfully use the tools I know and make a presentable comic panel that I can put my name on, then over to comic life. which has some nice image tools of it's own.
if you has DS issues then that is of no concern of mine The thread is about NOT leaving Poser After spending so much money and we have wandered too far off topic.
why much we compare apples with oranges again and again and again.
back to my rendering, I have some comics due.

Hardly a case of comparing who's software dick is larger when Poser doesn't even have a dick anymore.
What would actually help to stay on topic is if non-DAZ Studio users stopped sharing subjective, false DAZ Studio info from 10 years ago and actually concentrate on the topic at hand. DAZ STUDIO USER SINCE 2006

It's honestly a shame that a lot of the 'Newbies' and 'DAZ' users here don't respect the views of the generation that built this place and inspired others to have a go. (Davo, Shadowman etc...)
So I'm going to say this, in the last couple of years we've lost a lot of wonderful artists and even more in the last five years (Half of you newbies don't even know who they are)
"When a person is down in the world, an ounce of help is better than a pound of preaching." - basically the person who asked the question just wanted help. Should they carry on with Poser, simple answer - "yes, if they want to" or "If you have some spare time to learn a new program I highly recommend..."
So, take a chill pill, stop preaching, let users decide for themselves. If you need me, I'll be watching terrancew_hod falling off the stage during his Ted Talk. (Watch it on YouTube on Failarmy)
Respect to you all. (Poser and DAZ users alike)
