Hey folks,

DAZ noob here. Simple question:

I'm utterly confused by the myriad of names and terms for all the characters, Michael 3, Victoria 4, Genesis 8, Genesis 3 etc.. what works with what? I'm so confused I don't know what I can buy. The 'figure compatibility' for Satanica Real Gens says Genesis 3 - Michael 3. Does this mean I need one or the other or both? Lots of animations say the same... Is Michael 3 a type of Genesis 3 or something completely different? Do I need Victoria 4 or just Genesis 3 female for this catcrawl anim...

Very confused by all these versions within versions... is there a guide on how all these things fit together?

Thanks for your patience for what is no doubt a stupid question.

Michael 3 is different than Genesis 3, even though there is a Michael for Genesis 3 called Michael 7, lol. Yeah, it's quite confusing.

Michael 3 + 4>Genesis (Michael 5)>Genesis 2(Michael 6)>Genesis 3(Michael 7)>Genesis 8(Michael 8)

Started off that there was no Genesis figures, it was all stuff based off of Michael and Victoria. Then they came out with Genesis, which was a single figure for both the male and female bodies. Then genesis 2 came out, and this was the sixth ittereation of the Mike and Vicky figures. People were rightly confused as you are so once they got around to Genesis 8 the just moved the genesis number to match the Mike and Vicky number, there is no Genesis 4,5,6 or 7.

So, while I'd advise at this point if you're starting out to go for Genesis 3 or 8, probably 8, if you want that animation to work you'll need to invest in Michael 3 (not genesis 3) and Victoria 4.

Keep in mind that both of these figures are about a decade out of date, but Victoria 4 is still widely used today, she's a great model.

That all being said, please ask any more questions.

I also thought of some questions you should ask yourself;

1: What rendering engine are you looking to use? If Iray then you need an Nvidia gpu with I would say at least 8gb of vram.

( If you said iray then go for Genesis 3 or 8. The other figures aren't optimized for iray, they will work, but your results will vary widely from being fine to not working at all, there are products you can buy to fix this, but that's more money and time.)

2: Are you looking to do animations? Victoria 4 and Genesis 2 seam to be the better option for animation, but I mainly use Genesis 8 now and can do well enough with animations when I have the patience for it.

3: Do you want to buy newer items that appear on the front pages of the stores, here or Daz, or wherever? Then you'll want genesis 8, occasionally you can find a new character for Victoria 4 some places.

Here's my 2¢, whether you want it or not. ;)

IMHO, Daz isn't the best for animations, if that's the direction you'd like to go. The really good animations like you'll see at sites like Affect 3D are usually not done in Daz, even though they may be using Daz meshes. I play with this stuff because I enjoy it, and years ago I learned that I did NOT like trying to animate, but hey, that's me. If that's the direction you'd like to go, send it. But...you'll probably want different software.

I'll echo Brimstone's sentiment that if you want the latest and greatest content, the cutting edge stuff, Genesis 8 is where it's at. Yes, there are still artists that stick with V4 and Genesis 2, but if you do that, you're mostly stuck with legacy content, you won't see much if anything for them in the stores as a 'new item' anymore, simply because content creators know what's hot, and what will sell, and that's G8, and G3 to a lesser and lesser extent by the day. Soon, we'll have G9, and we start again. :/

I'll also agree with Brimstone, get the best nvidia card that you can swing, at least a 1080i with 8GB. Your CPU is less of an issue, because the native render engine in Daz is still Iray, and that requires an nvidia card to do anything. I run a 1080 and it's more than adequate for most scenes, but I'm looking at upgrading to an RTX 3 series in the not too distant future, but that will all depend on other expenses getting in the way. This is a hobby to me, and although I do spend a lot of time and money on it, it's a secondary concern to things like...rent. But, get the best nvidia card that you can.

Lastly, never stop asking questions, if it's a technical issue, post a screenshot, and if it's with a specific vendor's product, post the question in their subforum, you'll get answered a lot faster. Also, YouTube is your friend when it comes to learning. There are a lot of videos from various artists that explain things very well, and what the controls do. SickleYield has a good channel with a lot of information, I suggest checking it out.
