Hey folks, I had to start putting in more hours at work, which means I won’t have a lot of free time and energy to complete my new comics. Some person or persons thought i’d be cool to upload my comics in these free downloadable sites and this really crippled my sales and there’s not much I can do. I receive so many requests each month, but I just can’t make it happen anymore. These are the consequences of piracy. You guys love the art that your favorite artist(s) produces, but then some of you help support piracy by requesting comics for free. Make a small contribution at least or if you happened to download a comic for free, go to the store and buy that same comic. You would be supporting your favorite artist(s) and encouraging them to continue producing content you love. Make sense? I came back to givesome of youa chance. I won’t be playing thisgame of leaving and coming back. Please understand! Thanks!

Many an artist have suffered the same fate.

Some people just think they deserve everything for free.  some readers like to trade, offering copies of comics they may have purchased for perks at some site that allows them into some special group that allows them to access more free comics for their contribution.

The psyche of these folks seem to be that in some respects  if they post your hard work, it some sort of tribute to your legacy.

Thing is they could just post samples and say go here and buy the comic,  but they don't.  they just offer something they bought for free in hopes they can add to their collection without paying for it..

From what I hear the Spanish comic group,  Fansoridox, took on a well known  Russian site and won a judgement to have some 300+ comics removed from their free site. However Spain is much closer to Russia than we are..

if our comics are exclusive to a host site then the host site needs to go to bat for us as their income is affected by this as well..

Lets face it Doc Legume is no longer with us to fight the good fight. and something needs to be done sooner than later.

Regards  Shadoman

https://www.renderotica.com/gallery/shorturl/552692/Anti-Piracy-ad-2

I put up images like this in my comic - joking but friendly reminders if someone pirates it they can "Vote with their currency" for something they like - that dropping small amounts of money in the small press/indie market does affect it versus the stuff the giant companies decide to excrete.  Active things with living authors versus scans of Warren comics of the 70s that have most everyone involved dead now and they (latter years) only paid some of the writers/artists for their works in the first place.  New publications versus ancient 70s/80s thing someone holds the 'copyright' to but does NOTHING with, etc.

You can't stop people from pirating your stuff.  I have cartoons from years ago circulating, political cartoons I did for a small local paper but yes got paid for...  Be nice if I got $35 for websites that host them prominently as I got once for the local paper that printed them, but ain't going to happen.  Furthermore, going out of your way to stop it stops the pirates by ... ?seconds?  But it also alienates your customers. One time I bought a scan of a "men's Adventure" magazine from the 50s from someone claiming to be the legitimate rights holder.  PDF was locked so couldn't save text, make screenshot - and had to enter a password EVERY time.  That made me sure want (NOT) to buy again from them.

Also there is software by big companies - let's talk about one I think Earns it...  Both in very good software worth a good high price tag but also earns my ire for annoying protections.

Pixologic aka Zbrush.  I paid for them and  have a legit copy.  That means whenever I change computers (usually after a bricking) I have to try to 'retrieve' my 'license' because a computer that bricks doesn't give you fair warning to uninstall/deactivate.  Also some upgrades, like windows sudden mandatory shut computer down middle of the night trigger that lock...  A recent vacation I strolled through the streets of India and saw cracked versions of it that my local contacts assured would work (lots of work outsourced to them, beats hiring an American/European who took classes, etc.)  - $35.  Locked out so no upgrades of course, but isn't that a STEAL!?  Jeebuz - and whenever I switch computers even not related to a crash it's a WEEK of evenings to uninstall, de-activate and re-register all my dozens of main programs...(real warez enthusiast here) Since in RL I'm a "Good Boy" all those few minutes or longer of activation, verification, number/password retrieval add up even with files and checklists...  And if I had cracked ware I hadn't paid for it'd ALL work with a single overnight of "Restore from copy" main file...

I won't say, I can't say if I was in Pixologic's shoes I'd not do levels of encryption/copy-protection to try to stop casual theft/copying of the software.  But it really jabbed me - a grateful customer who used a full tax return and money he could scrape aside years ago as soon as he could afford it to buy a full copy of the software.  Like getting poked in the eye...  Again, I don't blame them and despite my anger did not buy one of those street vendor copies - even though worried one of these days after a Microsoft "Upgrade" or the next sudden crash they'll say "Sorry, we've decided..." and I face buying it again or months or more of 'appeals'...

I've decided I want someone who BUYS my stuff to be able to project my comics from a neural implant into his toaster or on the wall of his capsule hotel 30 years from now without having to try to retrieve a license of a card sale that far back, likely a legacy of 10 companies minimum.  And even though there will be some sharing it does turn into advertising.  Note also Drive thru site puts hidden watermarks into the pdf files they sell - live individual watermarks... including hidden ones.  Its a way of long term tracking that doesn't violate privacy but does leave a trail if someone 'shares' stuff they shouldn't.  Don't know if Renderotica has the software to do it with theirs though.

Recently I began seeing some of my Transgender comics (sold at another site) at several places including the above mentioned Russian site.

So when I wrap up a story I like to offer the cover art minus the usual Shadoman Comics and Comic title overlays as a bonus. After all it was this art that attracted then to buy it in the first place.  This time I gave then two copies one with a huger water mark and the other free of the eye offensive watermark.

I explained why I did it and what future comics could look like. I asked them not to share but tell their friends to buy a copy for their own enjoyment .   Will it work  who knows but it was a small act of defiance and maybe it will enlighten some.

Everyday I take a little time to cruise a few sites that I know booste art from this site and a few others  A great deal of it is Hentai art  but on some occassions I see my stuff, Backadders art,  and a few others Renderotica Artist. I report them and in the case of my own art I issue DCMA's that both sites honor.

There is just so much stuff out there for free and it is really troublesome. Sites  feign that they cannot control everything posted but they will remove them is it is brought to their attention and three out of 4 sites do it rather quickly

At one site My name is posted on their Do Not Post list . I joined the site and requested my name be placed on their so that I can just contact a Moderator there and inform them of the person who posted it and the stuff is removed within a day. Sometimes I like to be a pain in the ass and I will site mail the person who posted the item and point out by not reading the list and posting my stuff they are in violation of the sites TOS and it is grounds for banishment.

It's amazing how quick my stuff disappears..

Until there is some global devision enacted to fight for Piracy and enact stiff penalties it will continue it's just a way of life.

It is what it is. However, speaking from me, though I feel I'm not alone here, my enthusiasm gets tarnished and my interest fades. I still do have a few good comics left to in me, before I totally fade into the night. :)

Be well Shadoman in these crazy times.

How true.  Like you I still have a few comics left in me as I just eclipsed 71 years of age a few days ago

My post work program is on an old XP computer that was custom made for me. it's almost 11 yrs old and has only required a new video card and Hard drive.  When it dies, so likely will my comics but for now.. I render to keep my sanity, hardly anywhere to go with the Covid crisis

Stay well and safe
