I've bought tons of content through Renderotica using PayPal without an issue. This afternoon, however, every time I try to purchase an item, I keep getting hit with a screen telling me that my account is missing a payment option and asking me to add a debit or credit card, and even though I can close the tab, I can't proceed with the purchase. I checked my account and I see that everything is still set up the way it should be -- I made a couple of purchases through DAZ and Renderosity, and they went through just like normal, and then I tried to purchase the item I was wanting at Renderotica again, only to get hit with that same "add payment option" window that I can't proceed past.

Does anyone know what this is all about? I noticed this is also affecting a site I buy MP3s through, someplace I had never had an issue previously.

Thanks...

I know nothing, but this sounds worryingly like a phishing attempt. Have you tried asking PayPal direct whether there is anything wrong? I don't know that I would specify the problem shopping site, however.

I just tried using paypal to buy something here and this did not happen, it took me to the standard payment option screen.

It sounds like you might have a man in the middle attack going on here.

That sounds more like you are already logged into Paypal when trying to make the purchase. Do you have a Paypal account with no payment method attached yet? It's been a while since I've used that Paypal Direct interface but I seem to recall that in order to use Paypal as a "gateway" to do a card purchase, you had to be logged out, otherwise it would try and use your configured payment method and not give you the option to specify another card. Try making sure that you are not logged into Paypal when you try and make your purchase in the store.

we are talking about non R / X products right?  Just to be clear, pay pal works when items bought at the CG BYTE store front.

As a vender I have a pay pal business account, but I also buy things.  I have never been directed to use a card option over what I have in my pay pal account in regards to funds.

I encountered the same issue multiple times last night, with both Renderotica and the music site I use, and it happened whether I was already logged in to PayPal or not. It's a tab that comes up once you are on PayPal's site. I'm working really weird hours right now, and it was too late to call them last night when I first noticed it, and I didn't get home in time tonight, either, so I'm going to have to contact them tomorrow on my day off.

I was trying to purchase Kaluma's "High Resolution Nipples for Genesis 8 Female", which shouldn't have been an issue. I've bought tons of poses, props, morphs, and character add-ons through PayPal from this site -- including pretty much all of 3feetwolf and Meipe's products -- and this should have been no different.

Tried an experiment, and attempted to buy DubTH's new bathroom set through both Renderotica and CGBytes. If I'm not already logged in to PayPal, I get the standard log-in screen to enter my name and password, otherwise, it just passes me through, and in either case, I get hit with that "add a card to your account" tab. Close the browser tab, open a new one, log in to PayPal, and I can see that PayPal is still processing payments through the bank account I gave it access to 'way back in 2006, and I can see that the two purchases I made through DAZ and Renderosity last night have already cleared. If I can get a hold of them tomorrow, I'll post an update letting you know what they said.

EDIT: Crap -- GOG (Good Old Games) is doing this, too. However, the GOG tab was a little different. It says that my bank account -- the one that I use exclusively for online purchases through PayPal -- is not accepted. I think there's something weird going on between PayPal and my bank. I need to find out what the hell is going on here.

O.K., just got off the phone with the PayPal rep.

What she's telling me is that the vendor has the option of determining how to accept payment through PayPal (or in some cases, how not to). Most payments take 3-to-5 days to process, with PayPal basically fronting the money to the seller to conclude the transaction now, and then waiting to receive the money from the buyer at the end of that period. She's telling me that some vendors may choose not to go that route -- for whatever reason -- and instead insist on immediate transfer via debit or credit card. This seems a little nonsensical to me, since in either case, the vendor WAS receiving their money immediately and it was PayPal who was having to wait, but she said that this is what is going on. Maybe there was an issue with PayPal clawing back money from vendors that forced a change in the way things were being done.

If that's true, then Renderotica and GOG and a few others I buy from have changed how they're processing payments, even tho' some of you say that you're not experiencing this. If so, maybe you're not experiencing it YET or it's only being applied to a select group of purchasers. Also, it would mean that these vendors are not communicating to its customers that they've changed how they're processing payments, because I've received zero notification from anyone about this.

Other than that, she tells me my PayPal account is secure with a well-established history and no issues that she can see on her end. She also recommends that I add my debit card to the account and that I shouldn't see any difference (other than payments made via card will come out of a different account -- the account the debit card is linked to -- rather than the account I have set up for online payments through PayPal). Not real happy about that -- kinda defeats the purpose of having a dedicated account set up for that, but it treats online purchases via debit more or less the same as real world purchases via debit.
