Hi Folks,

I'm working on some custom clothing and thought I'd get your feedback. I'm totally new to texturing and have no idea how to do this well, but here goes the first attempt. I also tried to put in some morphs or outline parts of textures so they can be hidden/changed for a more varied look but with the same cloth asset.

I was so excited about the dress being complete that I forgot to post the dress texture. I have a translucency map & normal for the below texture - I thought it looked neat but not sure if its realistic for a mini dress. A mini sweater maybe, if it was thicker?

  • The overall hexagonal texture & the translucency map was created using Krita (open source tool)
  • The normal map cloth texture was created using blender and procedural magic textures
  • I don't have the best folds yet on the normal map, but what little there is was sculpted in blender in multires and converted to a normal map

As much as I applaud your effort, there is a hard drive choking number of tiny, slinky, skimpy, teeny weeny, ity btiy, little dresses. It's called 'skimpware' and I believe that there's waaaaay more than enough. As a serious fashionista I'd like to suggest that instead of less, you (and other clothing makers) start working on more. Long flowing skirts or voluminous skirts like you'd see in formal ball gowns or older bridal wear. How about those mouth wateringly sexy Hollywood style boudoir sets from the 40's and 50's. We seem to have forgotten that what you can't see is far sexier than what you can.
If you need suggestions or inspiration, drop me a PM and I'll fill your hard drive with ideas.

Fair point. Skimpy dresses are easier to make if I'm being honest - specially if they're hugging the body (from a technical stand point).

I'll give your ideas a try. Do you have a reference image I can base the dress off of - googling turned up some revealing dresses - is it something like this?

EDIT:

I don't think I'm skilled enough to do the above images yet, since the poses don't show the complete dress and I'm not creative enough to fill in the gaps. I found this image of a dress with multiple angles - I'll try to create this in blender and see how that goes. If anything the journey will be fun! (I hope)

Hi Sunia! I like the look of the dress and all the various materials for it, I think it came out pretty good. The fact that you went into the effort of even being able to show or hide the borders shows a great enthusiasm and effort. The only suggestions I'd make is to give it a displacement map to make the knit look a little thicker, and make a 'Skirt Longer' morph. There are many dresses similar to this, yes, but you did a terrific job - especially as someone new to all this - and you should feel proud! I know many of us would gladly add it to our libraries.
thanks 1 user thanked Bumper2 for this useful post.
