Whenever Daz introduces a new character I get cringe because I know, as a vendor, I'm going to get "how come this doesn't support Genesis 9 or Genesis 8" complaints.  At what point do vendors just hang it up and stop supporting a generational figure?  I'm still supporting V4 for the Poser version, when it comes to creating products, I have 3 females to support, 6 figures if males are included.

On the other hand, I get miffed because Daz is almost exclusively coming out with Genesis 9 products and it's a rarity to see Genesis 8 supported, especially in the hair products.

Opinions? Thoughts? I'd be interested to know what the majority of Renderotica users (my mainstay customers as I'm exclusive here).

I'm still sticking with G8. I've tried playing with G9, and I don't like it. Not to mention how much I have invested in G8, a number that I don't really want to know, and how much I'd have to invest in G9 just to get to the same level of flexibility and usability. G8 does what I want it to do. G9 does not improve on it, at all. Hip bends are the biggest issue that I have, and G9 does not do any better. I can't see the point of spending thousands of dollars to get G9 to the same place that I currently have G8.

I think some of the poser hold outs have the same feelings about DS, they have thousands invested in it. My god though, with DS, clothing and everything just works seamlessly. I went kicking and screaming till it was unavoidable.

G9's hips were passable at the very beginning but not great to be sure. DAZ contributors have released several bend correcting products for her over the years and just recently Ultimate Natural Bend 2.0 came out. It is AWESOME!

As for my personal use, I completely switched over to G9 when it first came out and about a year ago I removed all my G8 stuff (outside of clothes and props which I use the converters for) as I don't ever use them. I only purchase G9 characters, clothes...etc now. One benefit of the G9 platform is that you can use the clothes, shoes, etc. on both males and females. Which is nice since I have amassed quite a collection and always find clothing for all the characters I work with for the scenes I am making.

I think if you can support both, it would be wise to do so. Often times I see something come out for G8 that I wish was available for G9 and would be an instant purchase for me and I can imagine there are many who have experienced the same thing.

Just because you mentioned it and I am curious, how many V4 sales do you see?

Thanks for asking the community!

Customers must see the benefit of moving up. My experience with G9 is that its not much better, but more complex. It taxes the CPU or your graphics card more to render. That and the fact that you must start over with clothes and accessories and expressions and morphs and poses, I'm sticking with G8 and G8.1.

I support G9 in my new products because it's the current figure.
However I can't see dropping G8 support in the foreseeable future as it's the figure I personally use daily, and there's still content being made for G8 pretty regularly.
I don't think a week goes by where I don't see something that is either G8 only, or G8/9 on the DAZ store and plenty of G8 stuff here as well. :)

Just my 2 cents :)

I've tried to use G9 on several occasions and been met with what can only be called sub par results every time aside from a morph for a child's stuffed toy.

Personally I will not be using G9 and will continue with G8 - 8.1 probably even past the next release the way Daz is going.

Add me to the list of "Tried G9 and went back to G8". I don't see anything better about it and it bends like V4. Hopefully G10 will be better. Otherwise, I'm stuck on G8.

99% of my stories are based on G8 characters.

I was going to ignore G9, but some attractive characters came out and there were good deals on new G9 characters.
Been trying to catalogue my stuff recently and I have stuff I don't remember getting that must have come in bundles, like hair. I've not looked properly at the clothes yet. I find all the male & female items being mixed together a bit confusing.

As long as the environments remain useable with all versions, I'm happy to combine content from any generation.
In my Western, the boss was G9, because he didn't physically interact with any other characters who were all G8. He simply looked the part more than any of the G8 males I had.

With Davo stuff, it might be nice to use some on my G9 characters and I'm too lazy to convert the poses at the moment.
In general, I didn't buy poses and props that were G3 only, since I started shortly after G8 became the current product and I have no G3 characters interesting enough to torture 😉

Frankly, I just viscerally hate the G9 generation.
Unfortunately, most of the recent Daz products are G9 only, a backward compatibility is just a dream.
The unimesh stuff is horrendous. I spend way too much time to get something believably male or female (sorry, I'm an old fag, strictly binary-heterosexual).
It's also the very first time I have so many "duplicate formulas", so it takes hours to load a scene.
And from my POV the Daz character shaders are totally bland, lacking detailed real life defects. Using Ren....ub people is much more fun.

Last, the Daz "Premier" is a hint of what is coming next : and I just hate these subscription schemes.
It's too bad Poser is more or less dying.

All of my OC characters are G9 and I can confidently say I'm very happy with how G9 looks and performs using it. I only got into daz in the last year and a half not knowing of the program before then so I just went with the latest model not knowing much about it. Safe to say that first half year was a struggle waiting for morphs and geographs to release for G9.

Now all my models are kitted out with everything I need and I have no complaints, the artists that create products for daz have my upmost respect as it must be very frustrating dealing with people wanting this for that and that for this and just making the products we use as a whole.

Just as an example this was my latest render that I've made using G9. No complaints about the quality of the models textures geographs that Meipe has made that they can control.

I'm about 60/40 G8 over G9. Use both, but am currently pretty much limited to two G9 characters in a scene if I want to use any significant environment props.

And this Iray/Nvidia combination is getting really pricey !
32 Gb of vram would be nice for 2 people in a realistic outdoor environment, I'm fond of outdoor bondage...
But the price, at least in France, is around 3000 euros. It's not reasonable for a hobby !

Late reaction, but oh well...

Even though I've been experimenting with G9 a bit I just don't like the environment at all, it just doesn't "click". So far there are several (female) G8 and 8.1 figures which I think are totally awesome (including several from this very same website) yet I never had the same vibe with G9.

I did buy a few characters which seemed nice, but actually ended up disappointing. Belly areas which didn't look as nice, morphs which... I dunno, didn't do it for me.

It's just not something I'm willing to invest in, so I'm still fully focused on G8/8.1 and that's probably going to stay that way for quite a while.

The more I see of G9 the less I like it.
Normally I am an early adopter, but on this occasion, there was so many things I didn't like I passed on it & I don't regret it. I just hope that if & when we get G10 it will be G10M & G10F not another unimesh fiasco!
I'll stick with G8 / 8.1F until G10F, if it arrives, is proven.

Hey sweetie... Well I use 9 and 8 equally, (and 3 and 2 and even v4.)  I do wonder how long before 10 comes out :(

When I started with Daz, I started right with G8's. All my characters are now G8s, only have a few specific items that are G9-only. So far, I still prefer G8 for everything, easier to handle and mess around with.

I use a pose converter to convert from G3 to G8, although that's not really possible with V4(Hard as heck to convert and they don't look good). Tried backporting G9 items to G8F, but it isn't so easy.

SO IT'S YOU!!!! ha ha just kidding.  I hope they don't do a 10.  Other than wanting a new model to ensure continued revenue stream with vendor support.  It's really tiring and cumbersom to keep up with all the figures.  I'm half an inch away from dropping Poser figure support as it just takes time.  I'm still using G8 figures 99% of the time.  I wish they would come out with a simple G9 to G8 hair converter script other than trying to scale it manually.

Glad to hear from ya!

Cheers,

Davo
