View Full Version : Any 3D porn producer that can give me some advice?

I'm eager to learn to produce my own 3D porn to build my own paysite or sell it to a sponsor but the problem is that I'm not so talented and don't have a big budget, just some spare time and will to learn. That's why I need the more experienced members of this board to tell me what's the easiest software to learn that can produce desirable results with the least talent possible but is yet affordable. I was looking at Daz 3D, Blender, Poser and Carrara and I think that all of them produce desirable results but I can't afford some of them. Is there any software similar to those cheap/free easy to learn capable to produce similar results that I didn't mention? I was sarting to learn Blender but I found it a bit difficult to learn at first, are the other ones any easier?

I would also like to ask to the 3D porn content producers what kind of material does the sponsors usually buy? Still images, movie clips, full movies? How much time does the typical full movie last? Do you usually build your models/textures or buy them? If you build it what techniques do you use, can you point me to some tutorials? If you buy it, where do you get it?

Can somebody help me to get started in this hobby/business? I have some ideas that I think have some potential but nobody is using them, they can even become new niches. I would like to find out by myself if they are profitable. Thanks in advance and have a nice day!

Daz studio is free and can do decent animation. There are many free or cheap modelling programs like wings3d, anim8or, hexagon, pegasys (both DAZ) and silo , shade etc. Check the renderosity modelling forum, theres a post at the top. Blender has an *interesting* interface that some love , others hate.

Web sites may buy stills , series (group of stills that make a story) or animations , usually short. Full movies (anything over 10 minutes) are very hard to do on a small budget, it just takes too long to render out.

Build or buy, its a cost thing. If you can buy most of your sets and clothing you can put out more stills or animation time than building it all yourself. It takes time to learn to model , and map , and texture and that comes out of your production time. There are aa number of animated Poses that would get some sex anims going pretty quickly.

I would start animating with loops of a few seconds , maybe 15 seconds maximum non looping. That is short enough to render out and long enough to be challanging.

Texturing and modelling can get you something unique, and that can be valuable.

GIMP is a free paint program that is similar to photoshop. Photoshop elements is a subset of Photoshop and quite good for basic work.

If you use free textures and props check that they are permitted for commercial use.

Look at some of the Paysites already established. They vary a lot in quality and a few seem technically poor quality, but they may make money because of the content.

Theres a set of links on the old rotica site (www.renderotica.com) for other sites featuring 3d art.

* just my opinion*

Lets face it.. CGI is NOT a cheap hobby to pursue.... Heres the rub,

Daz Studio still offers a free version of their software for any beginner.. and you can go to DAZ's free section and for now Pick up Vicky 4 base and Michael 4 base for free, , You can join the platinum club for $99 a year or pay by the month $7.95. This gets you a ton of freebies plus discounts on Daz original stuff and a $5 voucher every month to use on non platinum merchandise. (BTW the M-4 male does not come with any genitalia, Daz forces you to buy a texture and morph package to complete the M-4 male) and you need other Morphs packages to alter character features so you will have to buy them, Basic DAZ Studio is free, yet the enhancments packages must be purchased. So one way or another you will have to lay out some cash..

If you go with Poser, you can start with a lower version of the software and save a few $$ but I would not get anything below Poser 6. P-7 is even better becuse it has some great features that works with some of the new merchandise that is now being released. P-8 still have some bugs to be worked out but is the new kid on the block and that means the highest priced software at about $200

All Poser software comes with characters you can use right out of the box, but take it from me, if you're going to do adult stuff The G-2 characters from Poser look terrible in the nude. and to make them look better you have to buy morphs sets to enhance their face and body features..

There is a ton of freebie stuff out there, Renderotica, as well as Renderosity have a massive free section, but you need to look at the licences and read me files to see if you can use any of the free stuff in a commercial venture where you make a profit.. A great deal of the freebie artist will grant you permission to use freebies in free galleries and this is cool to cut your teeth on, but you will either have to reframe from using free gear or ask for the creators permission to use the freebie if you want to use it for profit. Otherwise you are in violation of copyright infringement

So no matter how you look at this, you will have to lay out some change somewhere or another ... there is no way around it.the old addage of you have to spend money to make money has never been more true with GCI software.

The only positive thing is that if you have a website, and you make money, you can claim your purchase as a legitimate business expense when you file your taxes.. Just save you Credit cadd reciepts and make copies of you email conformations..

The best thing to do for the moment is to get Daz Studio, grab some freebies and play around with the free stuff.. see if you have the creative tallent and patience to make some kick butt images that folks will want to pay money to view your website.. if you can do that, then you can decide how much money you want to sink into your website Venture..

I post work for Premier and have a website at Erotic Illusion, between the two sites, I spend @$150 + a month on props this does not include software, or Platinum memberships .. I use no freebie software with the excpetion of maybe a half dozen or so props and I have permission on file to use..

Everything I use I have licences for so no one can come back and accuse me of Copyright Infrigement. and I kick out about 60 + images a month to keep my Premier and Erotic Illusions subscribers happy with fresh content. At the Premier site I share a place with many other artist and we do our best to post art so there is something new there each and every day.. But at Erotic Illusions, subscribers pay to see one individual artist and therefore I have to keep that site updated on average of twice a week. I promise my subscribers 14-20 images each week and post Series stories on Friday and Individual panel art on Mondays

As to what subject matter is popular.. My mainstay is BDSM & DID (Damsels in Distress) it consumes about 70% of what I do for single panel and Illustrrated stories I create for Premier Series and then eventually complie the story to a PDF doc to sell in the store.. The other 30% is mixed between Pinups, ponygirls, basic hetero and lesbian erotica, and a little shemale art on the side.

I enjoy doing this, but treat it as a business..

Thank you people for your very helpful responses, now I have a better idea of what I'm about to get involved into. I see that the main problem here are the availability of the models. What about Makehuman? It builds models compatible with Blender in a few minutes and you can change their gender, ethnicity, age and muscular type just by moving some sliders. The only problem I see with that are the textures because they're not exported along with the model. I'm not too gifted with Photoshop but I can learn. Does somebody knows where I can find some good tutorials? I got an idea after I saw some tutorials which involves cuting some stock pictures into pieces and putting them together later to create a full texture. Then desaturate them to get a gray image. Then maybe I can apply a layer with a human skin color and somehow blend it with the gray image to get a unique and realistic texture. The problem is that since my knowledge is limited I have no idea about how I can make this effectivelly. Have somebody tried this? Where can I find a suitable tutorial?

I wonder how much time does a 10 minute movie takes to render. My idea was to make an animated story with an interesting plot and maybe make a weekly or monthly episode but maybe it will not be posible due to the time it takes to render. Maybe is better to make stills instead of movies. Thanks again people for your responses. They were very helpful. I definetly going to try and have fun with this.

One of the best Animation artist I have seen is Stimuli, If he is still a member here, you should send him a Personal Message to get some relevent time frames for Animations.

Size is also important most as animations are done at 320 x 240 to conserve hard drive space on ones computer... but Stimuli did a 300 x 400 animation of Aiko walking and then did a continuos loop The image was 10.1 MB in size but it simply awesome for its size and had great clarity.

You can go to the galleries at the old site and locate the Non Premier Animation section and flip through the pages till you see a thumbnail image called Aiko 4 V4.2 Showoff deluxe.. This should give you some idea of the work Stimul has done (and this artist has gotten better since he first arrived.) If you have yet to sign onat the old site you just need to register with your current username and a password to gain accesss.. Just click Premier at the top of the page here to get there and then locate the non premier animation thumb.

If anyone can supply you with a time fram for a 10 minute epic it would be Stimuli.. as for a turtorial.. thats a whole other animal..

I think I would experiment on stills before you press on to snimation,

As to the other software you mentioned above I personally have not used or seen these.

Good luck in your endevours

Hello hermit....I recieved your message.

Yes I'm still a member here...though the current animation gallery format has kept me (and other animation artists) from posting very many animations.

Looks like mark and shadow gave you some great info already.
As mentioned above, the free version of Daz Studio is a great free way to get started especially considering that the other Daz products like figures, clothes, props, scenes etc. are made to work specificly in Daz studio (as well as Poser) and are some of the best pre-made content around.
I will say that Daz Studio (in my opinion) is better for still images rather than animation....though admittedly I am not too familiar with the new iterations of DS and it's animation capabilities. For animation you may want to take the next technical step up to Poser, which is the program all my animations and stills are done in.

Just get DS or Poser and start clicking buttons to see what they do. Thats what I did 4 years ago and it quite literally changed my life.

Animations can be a daunting beast to tame and very time consuming if you are not using motion capture. Motion capture can save alot of animating time and provide very realistic movement in your figures but requires expensive equipment and facilities...not to mention actors willing to do weird things on camera while wearing a goofy suit. In my opinion if you're going to make adult cgi using motion capture you might as well cut out all the expensive and complicated tech stuff and just film real people boinking.

On the subject of animation time.....this is a complicated issue. Animating by hand does take time and an understanding of how people move. Many people (understandably) just dont have the time or patience to keyframe figures. Luckily the Renderotica store has many animated poses created by artists like mastermind and myself that adult cgi website owners can apply to their figures in just a couple clicks.
That's right, one product and a couple clicks could have your V4 figure dancing and her boobs bouncin.
All my poses are created specificly for use in Poser and work well in DS (especially the more recent ones) and can be exported to other programs like Carrarra or the high end programs like Autodesk's 3D studio Max. They also include a full readme with tons of info and animation tips and I provide full technical support for all my products to help you get the most out of them.
I also create custome animations for websites. The price for these is negotiable depending on the nature and complexity of the work you need done.

sorry for the sales pitch there but, hey, I got Poser figures to feed =P

Render time of animations depends completely on the pixel size, length and content of the scene....as well as the power of your computer(s) just like still images.
I've had animations that render in less than an hour and some that take many days to render.....and thats not even approaching a 10 minute animation.

Large animation houses (like Pixar and Dreamworks) use "render farms" to greatly spead up the rendering and dynamics process. A render farm is typicly a network of computers among which the rendering task is divided. Obviously 100 computers can render a 100 frame animation a lot faster than one computer can....but most of us can barely afford one good computer let alone multiple computers.

Creating your own figures, making textures for them and rigging them is a whole other beast and is usually a task divided amongst multiple artists.
You would be better served (as a beginner) utilizing the vast and impressive community of figures, props, textures and scenes available from Daz 3d, Renderosity, 3dcommune and right here at Renderotica......as well as a myriad of other sites. After learning how to manipulate figures and objects you should get a better sense of wether or not you want to tackle actually creating them.

As for running a website containing such material.....I cant help you there. I know nothing about running a website (which is why I dont yet have one of my own). The above posters are much more knowledgable about such things than I am.

I would be happy to help with more specific information about using Poser and DS for animation or still imagery. Just message me here at Renderotica, the old renderotica (I miss that place :icon_cry: ) through Yahoo Messenger (stimuli_8) or email me at stimuli_8@yahoo.com.

happy posering!

Daz studio now has in version 2 a halfway decent keyframe editor so its not ideal but it is workable. Using some packaged poses would make the job faster. (and help feed Stim :) )

The Daz figures and characters for them should be all you need. Pick up Apollo Maximus from Antons website for a male figure.

Animation times depend on frame size , frame rate and a bunch of stuff to do with lights, shadow calculation and textures.

10 minutes of animation is 10 * 60 *24 frames = 14,400 frames @24 fps
10 * 60 = 600 seconds * 24 fps = 2400 + 12000 = 14,400
(24 is film and Pal tv standard, NTSC video is 30)
say 5 minutes to render one frame and its 1200 HOURS to render out the animation + time to assemble and add sound. thats 50 days.
720 x 480 pixel dimensions is close to NTSC tv standard. Going smaller speds things up . 360 x 240 is 1/4 the size. If these are for display in a web page try some different sizes and see what works .

You need to reduce your render time as much as possible or find a different tool to use. Daz studio with Opengl may be faster although a preview render in Poser may be all you need.

I have seen very small animated GIF files at 8 frames per second that looked good .

(check my arithmetic ;( )

Some great info in here guys. :)

Anyhow im new to this game and have been using Poser for 2 years on and off, and i would say i am now just starting to get the renders skill level ive been trying to achieve for the last few years, so ya it is a very patient game as some of you have said.

Anyhow i had good paint shop skills before i ever got in to this 3d rendering game, and that helps a shit load when doing postwork for stills, so dont just only rely on what ever 3d package you use... Try and get some basic paint or photo shop knowledge as well.

I really like Blender for modeling. It's all I've ever really used. Poser is great value for the $$$. Not super expensive, but there is a cost . . . damn software companies. ;)

Lots of great freebie rendering engines. 3D is not an expensive hobby but it takes some time.

I totally agree!
3D doesn´t have to be expensive at all. Specially when you are just starting.
I usually rely on freebies. Actually, my latest image (shown on my current signature) is basically made out of freebies. Including the Daz Studio software.
I highly recommend you to stick with DAZ Studio. At least for now. It is really easy to use and will get you the results you need. And the best part is that its FREE.
You don´t have the need to enhance Daz Studio at all. I have done animation and images with it since version 1.4 and have never used a single addon or plugin for it. So don´t worry about that.

I would recommend you to stick with images. Animation is a tedious and hard thing to do compared to regular renders. Specially if you want a site to live from them. I guess you would need many of them and that can be way too much. Just as a suggestion, maybe you could do small simple gifs to spice the place and center your efforts in comics or stuff.

There are awesome free male genitals too at Maleposerotica. Much better than the Daz one.
The complete Aiko 3 is available for free at Daz with her morphs and all. She may be a good option to do animation, since she is lighter than the newer figures.
Apollo Maximus is a great free character (much better than M3 in my opinion) and he comes with genitals.

About 98% of freebies out there allows commercial use. But in my personal case, if I were into using them for something big like a site, I’d confirm this and get permission of the author. But you´re a grown up so I won´t preach you what to do. ;)

I am including a list with the most useful stuff to begin with. Everything here is for free. I hope it is of any help. :)

Lets face it.. CGI is NOT a cheap hobby to pursue.... Heres the rub,<snip>

Not to mention:

Most animations or porn that are long enough to allow the viewer to reach umm...

...the desired outcome, require a large number of man-hours to create.

Voices:

Any voice simulation software that you can afford at a hobbiest/amateur/small business level pretty much sucks.

Voice modification software is OK, but it basically just shifts frequency. If you do all your own voices, all your females are going to sound the same.

Professional voice overs are expensive.

in Porn ? talk ? you must watch some high quality stuff

oooooooooohhhhhhhhh, eeeek , YES YES MORE HARDER and some sound effects are what ya need most.
