Emily West
Emily Pickman was born during the early morning hours of a brisk September day, 1915 in what could be considered a hospital in a small Maine town whose name is not wholly important. The father of the girl was not present for the birth, or for any part of the girl’s life. He was a field surgeon from America and presumed dead by her mother, Margaret Pickman.
Margaret met Emily’s father while he was on a short leave from the war in what she would call love at first sight. While most soldiers would be grateful for a chance to leave the battle, the man acted as it was more of an inconvenience. He rarely answered any of her questions about his past, or what he did before joining the army as a field surgeon. In the end, Margaret was only able to learn that the man’s name was Herbert and he attended Miskatonic University in the town of Arkham Massachusetts. She still loved the mysterious man and though it took a little effort, she was able to seduce the surgeon and to have him in bed, which happened to be on the last night of his leave. After that night Margaret never saw or heard from Herbert again. When the letters she sent began to return unopened, she assumed he had died.
Emily’s life was that of a normal girl from Maine with a few queer habits that local folk just dismissed as her upbringing without a father. All that began to change when she left her Maine home for that of the college life at Miskatonic University.
The first incident happened only a week into her first year of studies. She collided with an older professor in her rush to make it to class on time and both fell to the ground in a tangled mess. The professor’s glasses were knocked off and he cursed at her as he felt around for them. His face again his face drained of color as he put the glasses on and saw who he had bumped into. He pointed at her and began to scream out ‘west’ while pointing at her. Emily, with no idea what he meant, quickly left the professor. By the end of her next class the incident was just a forgotten memory to her.
Rumors soon began to spread though the university’s faculty about one of the first year medical students and who she resembled, the late and infamous Dr. Herbert West. It would have been best if those rumors were quieted before they reached the student population and the ears of the one which it could be the worst for. Any normal person, upon hearing these rumors, would discredit and ignore them as nothing. Though Emily is not one whom you would call normal.
She began her own investigation to see if the rumor was indeed true. Her nights were spent in the University’s archives searching for information on Herbert West. Much of what was on Herbert was about his grotesque ideals and experiments that he had tried to perform while a student. There was a photograph that Emily found, which she sent to Maine to see if her mother could confirm, along with the name of a student who helped Herbert. The man was residing in the Arkham Asylum since Herbert’s mysterious disappearance.
Emily’s visit to see the man went just as well as her run in with the old professor. Upon entering his room he began to scream and cowered in the corner farthest away from her.
In the month’s following her trip the asylum, Emily had the proof she needed to say that she was indeed the daughter of Herbert West. The photograph she sent to her mother was returned with a letter that confirmed the man in the photograph was the man who Margaret had slept with. She also received a letter from the former assistant of Dr. West which apologized for his behavior upon seeing her and extended an invitation for her to visit.
To the dismay of the older professors at the university, Emily accepted the invitation and visited the man at the asylum on a weekly basis. At first he was hesitant to relinquish any details of the experiments and the formula that was used, but soon his old zeal to see the success of the process overcame him. He told Emily what he could about the chemical mixture used along with the warning of what to expect if the mixture was not right for that body.
For the next couple of years, the university kept a close eye on the recently renamed Emily West. She recruited another female student, Mary Ann Thorton, as her assistant. The two girls started to dress in odd outfits that no modest woman, or lady of the night, would dare wear. There was an uneasiness that came to allowing the medical student access to the morgue. With no hard evidence to convict Emily of continuing her father’s experiments so they could not deny her access. There was only on instance where a morgue janitor claimed to have seen the two passionately kissing, but it could not be confirmed. The two kept their own experiments a close secret leaving only speculation on what was being done. Their study of the evil Necronomicon only elevated the fears of those who knew of what might be happening.
It was late one night in early May when Emily became just like her father. Emily was on her way back to Arkham after spending the weekend up in Maine. Mary Ann was anxiously awaiting her arrival out on the boarding platform even though there was a light rain. As the train pulled into the station Mary Ann fell onto the tracks into its path. Her head was severed by the wheels as the passed over her neck without so much as a bump. If Emily was expecting to see Mary Ann that night, then her body may not have been discovered until the next morning. The local police searched the area and finally found the body laying on the tracks. The head was found several minutes later under the train itself.
Emily escorted the body of her assistant to the cold storage of the university morgue. No autopsy would be performed until the next morning. Though Mary Ann’s body wasn’t there the next morning and local authorities were not able to locate Emily either. The search was called off after a couple of days by the university for undisclosed reasons. A fake form was written up claiming that Mary Ann’s body had been incinerated and the whole incident was left to be forgotten. Everyone in the town of Arkham did just that and let the tale of Emily Pickman and Mary Ann Thorton turn into another story to be told around the campfire.
The man who called himself Herbert West’s friend received two visitors one week after Mary Ann’s fatal incident. One of the ladies looked as if she was pregnant. Her voice echoed from her swollen belly when she spoke though. The other was dressed in queer outfits that caused the asylum workers to look at her with both awe and disgust. They requested a private visit, closing the door to the cell behind them after they entered. Their visit did not last long and soon disappeared into the night fog. A terrible laugh emanated from the man whom they had visited as he began to whip around the cell in crazed frenzy. When he was finally restrained and sedated, the attendants found a photograph lying on the floor. Captured on the film were Emily and Mary Ann standing in the morgue. Mary Ann was holding her severed head in her hands with an expression of ecstasy while Emily stood behind holding a syringe in her neck and caressing her right breast. The photograph was said to be destroyed, but it is rumored that it is stored in the archives of Miskatonic University.

Well this is my first story that I have really written. Feel free to comment on it to help me improve. This story is inspired by H.P. Lovecraft's Herbert West - The Reanimator and I wanted to write in a style close to his, but I know that didn't quite go as planned.
