This tutorial works for non-DForce clothing. The examples I provide in the tutorial are also based on non-DForce clothing too, because I think that most clothing such as underwear or tights do not need DForce effect.

Is this workflow different from just using a smoothing modifier? I don't want to pay for something I already know about.

Hi, 
The principle of this workflow is completely different from the smoothing modifier. It can help you make your character's clothes fit large props like male gens. Please refer to the promotional images for this product, the rendering results in these images cannot be achieved with the smoothing modifier alone.
