Hey everyone,
I meant to post about this yesterday, but because of the actual issue I spent about 12 hours doing work on our Renderotica & CGbytes Tumblr accounts (more info on that below lol)

IF you have not yet heard, Tumblr announced yesterday that as of Dec 17th it will no longer allow adult content on it's platform, and per their explanation 'adult content' means any and all nudity, female presenting nipples and or actual sex of real life humans,  Exceptions will be made for medical things such as breast cancer before / after, gender reassignment images, protests involving nudity.

So you read that and say, but Teron / Loki we do 3D stuff, or, We do hand drawn stuff what about us?

Illustrations and artwork IS exempt from this new rule BUT none of us (that I am aware of) qualify as either,  when they say 'illustrations are artwork' they actually mean stuff like books, statues and or paintings,  they even have a line in their updated TOS about our type of art that says

this includes content that is so photorealistic that it could be mistaken for featuring real-life humans (nice try, though)

So, needless to say ANY and ALL nudity not related to medical, educational, political or the arts is about to be wiped from Tumblr.
(bra and panty stuff is still fine, along with fully clothed stuff, or scantly clad stuff)

To start their banning process Tumblr used some 'smart AI script' to scrub their databases and flag any and all "adult content' this actually lead to some 'funny' results, as it appears in some cases, more non adult images were tagged then actual adult images Hence why I spent 12 hours yesterday submitting hundreds of images for 'manual review' to get them unbanned.  I'm not going to bore you with all the details, but if you use Twitter pop 'Tumblr' into the search bar there and then click TOP and you'll see a LOT of the wrongly flagged stuff that people had to get reviewed.  (any flagged images NOT submitted for review get 'removed' on the 17th.

At any rate, many NSFW Artists are now about to be homeless, and many of them are fellow 3D artists, I've made and will keep making posts on our Renderotica Tumblr account inviting them here as their new home, so keep your eyes peeled for some new blood OR returning familiar faces.

Meanwhile we will be retooling our Tumblr account so we can keep promoting our featured artists there, but using content that fits into their new rules,  this will also mean we will be opening up the books for new featured artists, so if you are not already one AND you either already have some non nude or lingerie type content in your gallery, speak up here so I can add your name to my list to review!

That's about all there is for now on the situation, I'm taking the day off to rest, but since I'm a die hard work-a-holic at heart I'll still be checking in more then I should ;)

If you have any questions, or want to know more about the situation, I'll do my best to answer questions as they come in.

First they came for Alex Jones...

Seriously, they need to be punished for this.

I got lots of my recent porn on tumbler.  Uh, if there was any "kids stuff" I missed it but really NOT in what I'd search for...  Lots of hot grade A meat lesbian pics, including high quality gifanimations.  Mostly just hot lickety split, some good bondage, whipping, some good breasts on the beach.  Boner.

BUT - also plenty of artists used it to build up a presence on social media, since in contrast to the XXX stuff some cartoon nudity was nothing.

Yeah, technically drawn stuff is OK, but they are going.  Know why?  SJWs.  They lie and click the "Report" button to CryBully anything.  So any artist there slightly more saucy than Disney level will have constant battles to get the account restored every week.  I'm not being abstract, know people already moving like Jack Cayless - who did some fanart for my "Slave Girls from Beyond the Galaxy" project early on - he's already dealing with a headache he doesn't need since guess what, plenty of people ready to file false complaints so he'd waste too much time constantly defending/challenging/restoring- after building it up for years.

Again, Tumblr needs to be punished.

Now, not saying use BitCoin and the Darkweb to have some of their employees maimed horribly, or maybe the barista across from their office - so even if a CEO is protected he's sued due to the horribly mutilated people who were maimed because of him...  Hired hitman, cut off the lips, bleach in the eyes, etc.  No, that's gross and going too far.  Nope, not advising anything extralegal...

A legal way-

Complain to advertisers.

Look at  the ads.

Google some addresses.

Write snail mail letters.  Polite, concise, to the point.  "Dear -----  Due to you advertising on Tumblr I shall boycott your product for 1 year.  I don't like you supporting their hatred of free speech and expression."  Don't worry, this is legal, you can use your name, etc.  No threats or anything, just more or less that sentence.

What this does is that their lawyers take these then use them to reverse the ad charges.  In reality they amount for a few beans out of a warehouse.  BUT - we can count on human greed and abuse of the legal system.  A good corporate lawyer will take these and turn them into negative charges so instead of earning any ad revenue they simply lose money, or can fight in court and lose more money.  Such a letter works as a legal document.

Oh, and btw, you'll likely get some kind of form letter - "Product .... is advertised across a wide swath of media .... not responsible ..." etc. - and a COUPON, maybe even for free product!

Don't laugh, this is how the whining cry bully SJWs ruin stuff.  Time to go "Get woke go broke" on Tumblr and just maybe they'll change direction.  Or at least their ass gets kicked so hard the other media groups feel it.

Oh, and as a footnote - Pixiv and Pawoo.

Can put stuff there - well don't want to go into TOS on a nuclear level.  I've been advising other artists under this harassment - like Bleedman - to put up stuff REALLY horrible there, then use existing media for goto links.  When SJW's send their letters to those they get "Aahaha  You suk dik!  Yu suk dik now!" coz it's Japanese and they are smart enough to realize controversy = attention.

I have a few semi work safe images in my Gallery and can add some more that I have created to show characters over at DAZ if you want so I guess I am throwing my hat in the ring for a Featured Artist.

>> Know why?  SJWs.  They lie and click the "Report" button to CryBully anything...

Wow, nothing like starting off a thread about responding to a crisis with some divisive political talking points! The first step in dealing constructively with any threat is immediately alienating a bunch of your potential allies.

So let me just say for the record books that as a self-identfied East Coast librul SJW, I also think this sucks. I get most of my porn from Tumblr and Reddit. There is a lot of great, sex-positive, feminist, kink-friendly, inclusive, LGBTQ-empowering smut on Tumblr. I follow a lot of those SJW-type folks. They worked just as hard as anyone to carve out their sexy little niches, and I guar-an-tee you they are just as pissed about this as you are.

(The role of right-wing religious ideologues in all of this will be saved for another post which, to the relief of all, I will never actually write.)

>> Again, Tumblr needs to be punished.

Agreed.

Tumblr is weak. It's not hard to see that Yahoo as a whole has been taking on water for quite some time.

The thing is, culture is culture and going after advertisers has been shown again and again not to work. First of all, no major brand is going to go to bat for pornography. The only ones who might are actually competitors like *deleted* who are already being hurt by the -p-i-r-a-c-y- freedom of speech rampant on Tumblr, and so are unlikely to become allies.

Second, the ones actually paying the bills are too far removed. No major brand's marketing team cares about Tumblr. They are small potatoes. They don't even show up on anyone's monthly reports.

So who can we get at? Management. The only ones who care about Tumblr are Yahoo and Tumblr. Shoot over their heads and we'll just miss the target.

So how to punish them without waving the porn banner, which won't garner enough mainstream support to succeed?

  • Walk Away campaign - Social media campaign urging Tumblr users to shutter their account. It's not just a free speech issue (actually, it's not this at all since Tumblr is not the government, but I digress) it's an issue of Tumblr reneging on their promise of a free place to share ideas. People came to their platform, built community, shared what mattered to them - all things Tumblr was supposed to be about - and now Tumblr is arbitrarily tearing all those communities apart. Pitched this way, everyone is vulnerable. Trust in online platforms is at an all time low anyway. A high profile movement to get people to shutter their Yahoo accounts would get Yahoo's attention mighty quick. It wouldn't even have to be all that successful.
  • Letterbomb campaign - A more direct approach - engaging people to flood Yahoo at all levels with coordinated messaging about what a dick move this is. It's got to be bigger than the Tumblr user base. A Twitter hashtag would be a good start. Possibly an online petition / site where people promise to close their Yahoo account if they don't change their minds. The higher the numbers go, the greater the pressure. I'm too ethical to suggest doxxing </sarcasm> but somebody inevitably will.

Building stuff in somebody else's walled garden is and always has been a dicey proposition. I learned this lesson from AOL itself. Interesting how history repeats itself - but then again, it's probably some of the same people behind this move.

I'm not surprised by this decision at all, what I am surprised about is that it took them this long to do it. I ditched my tumblr account well over a year ago because I saw some things posted there that no one should see. I was following some blogs that posted photos of Met Art girls and FTV Girls and similar works. Someone tried to sneak in some unmentionable content. It was incredibly unsettling. But when you have a platform that allows people to upload literally anything without review, it's bound to happen. I don't blame tumblr for making this decision, as much as it sucks for folks like us that just want to share our work with other CG artists. They have to protect themselves and I'm sure they were contacted by law enforcement before this decision was made. It's probably due to the laws that were enacted concerning pages like Craigslist and Backpage, they were going to be held responsible for ads placed by their users that involved sex trafficking. They can't police every single ad that goes up, so they eliminated the adult sections to cover their asses. Now, I strongly disagree with these laws, they place an undue burden on web admins and hosting services, but it is what it is for now.

In all candor, as someone who uses Tumblr and used this site for posting image for awhile, I don't see you guys getting a huge share of the artists. The majority have moved to Twitter as well as New Ground.

The layout here is too clunky and old. No one patrols the to see if users are tagging, so many users end up just labeling a picture with every label imaginable in the vain hope that it will get more likes. Candidly, I just block those artists so they don't clog up my view. Limitations for upload is also clunky and old. Interaction is pretty thread bare here, and on more than one occasion I reported pretty blatant underage images and not only has the images stayed up, no one even acknowledge the report I made.

I would love it if this site was more robust and had better admin. I mean heck, Chrome is warning me right now your site is not secure =/

Are you talking about HERE on 'rotica? I browse the gallery daily, and I haven't seen anything like that. If I did I'd surely report it, I don't want to see that kind of thing here or anywhere, I want this site to be around for a long time. Anyone violating the TOS for the gallery should be swiftly shown the door. I think we're a generally good community, and we police ourselves pretty well. I would really hope our members understand what can happen to the site if that kind of nonsense gets into our gallery.

If someone wants to use Studio or Poser to make that kind of shit, no one can stop them. BUT, keep it away from here! This community is better than that, it should not be tolerated.

Way too much to unpack just this moment so I'll just address one thing right now then circle back to cover the rest...

As for the site not being secure you are 100% CORRECT, the FORUMS and GALLERY pages are NOT secure, so make sure never to post your credit card info or personal information in a forum post or image comment.

Yes, I jest, all jokes aside, that alert is because you are trying to view a non secure https page, if you drop the s from http:// and load the page you will see NO WARNINGS,
the only place around the site that actually needs the 's' is the checkout process and the login page as that is the only places where you should EVER be entering sensitive information.

Some years back webpages would load with or without the 's' and if they were not secure pages you'd get the alert letting you know your connection was not secure, it's literally a non issue, your data IS and always has been secure here.

I'll address the rest in a bit when I circle back.

They've changed the rules here and there over the years, and the last change was one of the scariest!  To paraphrase, if your content got flagged NSFW those posts would be 'hidden' and removed from search, if too many of your images were flagged then your entire account would be flagged and hidden so to speak.

The bigger slap in the face right now is the current AI flagging system, ANY image flagged right or wrong MUST have the "review" button clicked, one by one OR they will be 'deleted' come Dec 17th (YOU will still see those images of yours, but no one else ever will)

As for the whole SJW thing, I'd have to switch accounts to really talk about that lol.

Sadly contacting Yahoo would do nothing, as Yahoo has nothing to do with Tumblr so to speak, Tumblr was sold to Verizon who also bought up AOL and Yahoo itself, they took Yahoo and AOL and merged them into a new company "Oath" which is the current "owner" of Tumblr, however at the end of the day Verizon owns Tumblr.

Also, can't really doxx a publicly traded company, all that information is publicly available already ;)

I love Tumblr and use it as my main source of porn. This sucks and I can see them reversing the decision soon after once the millions of followers abandon the place. On the plus side, I'll gain back the hour or two I spend every day browsing the place.

I have to agree that the site is "old and clunky" on multiple aspects. So I look forward to you adressing this.

The most clear one is the method by which one uploads images. On Tumblr that takes you one maybe two clicks.

For a single image on Renderotica you need to load up to what, 5 pages ? correct me if I'm wrong.

There is a simple way around the clunky 5 page ordeal to upload a photo. Still takes a few clicks but not the 5 opr 6 pages to do it the old way.  Once you get to page 2 Description, click on the "Switch to Single Form" button in the upper right hand corner.  Speeds things up considerably.

The site may be in need of refreshing, but a cursory search of the internet shows no other site like it. I hope it continues with the new owners and am happy to have a place that is explicitly for non-NSFW.

I have the same experience. There have been several images that look too young to me but I have stopped reporting them as a waste of time.

As for the decision of Tumblr, we are, like it or not, sliding towards an illiberal world. The extreme attitudes and the loudest whiners (whatever the subject) win out every time, and most of us are unwilling or unable to say we enjoy the sorts of things that can be described as porn. Tumblr will lose out, ultimately, because frankly I (and no doubt others) would never have gone to the site if it had not been for the right types of content being linked. I don't use Twitter. Sex, for some indefinable reason, is frowned on, even in allegedly liberal western society, but we are all directly involved with it, and none of us have the same combination of turn-on factors.
