The Call of Cthulhu is probably the singular story written by H P Lovecraft that has had an almost seismic effect on recent popular culture, slithering it’s tentacles into everything from plush toys to fictional election campaigns. While most people can recognise at least the name of the title character, very few people have actually read the tale.
