I appreciate the work that goes into creating scenes like auditoriums or large classrooms but I wish people would create small versions as once you add some characters to these large settings they still look mostly empty and take forever to render....

I have realised that iray is reaaallllly greedy. Have the program open with texture shading and it is using about 2-3% of the processor. Use iray and it jumps to high 90s!

I think Iray uses the CPU to render the file, That's my experience.
It does use most of the CPU, it jumps to about 90% or more on my machine.
I render just before retiring for the day, and close any background programs running.

Nvidia Iray uses Nvidia GPU's to render.  If the image exceeds the Nvidia card memory or if there is no Nvidia GPU then it goes to CPU rendering and takes forever to render.

If you don't mind setting your scene up and rendering in layers you can pack more stuff in. It takes some planning, but you'll be able to create bigger scenes than your card could normally handle.

No problemo. Here's a thread showing how to cast shadows on a background if you want to go that route. https://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/comment/4035871/#Comment_4035871. Just make sure you save to PNG so you'll have transparency. It's also possible in 3dl, but I don't know how to do it.

One of these days I want to put together a room full of people in an orgy scene or something like that.
