1) How did you get into creating 3D Products?
Honestly, it was mostly out of accident. I remember playing around with Poser 4 sometime in 2005 and thinking I needed something that wasn't available either on the market or as a freebie. And since I'm a (if I may say so myself) creative individual, I thought "why not make it myself"? How I got into selling them is a whole different story…
2) How long have you been creating products?
Since early 2006. I created them for my own personal use long before I had the confidence to put them up for sale.
3) Do you prefer Poser over Daz or vice versa? if so please tell us why.
I'm an avid Poser user. I don't even own a copy of DS anymore. I gave it a try, I honestly did. Perhaps it's because I started with Poser, but the DS interface was, IMO, much more complicated and difficult to figure out, and I did not particularly like that you had to buy various add-ons and plug-ins to produce anything worthwhile. No offense to DS users, it's just not my thing. And hey, I was asked to specify. J
4) What was the most challenging product you have created OR wanted to create?
Out of the ones I have made, it's definitely Mountain Men: 3-finger. That morph took
weeks to make in Zbrush! Some of my buyers might have noticed that I don't sell hair products. The reason for that is that I've never managed to model anything that lives up to my own expectations. I'm a perfectionist when it comes to my work, and if it doesn't pass my intense scrutiny, I won't sell it.
5) Where do you draw your inspiration from?
Oh, that's a difficult question. I get bombarded with ideas every day of the week and it takes time processing them all and scrapping the ones that won't work (for obvious reasons). I'm an introverted intuitive, so most of my ideas come from within. I have a vision of something I'd like to see created, and then I work backwards in my head to see if it's even possible to do. Sometimes it is, but most of the time it's not. Then it goes into my mental trashcan.
6) Tell us a bit about your creation process, what steps do you go through to make a product?
Depends on the product, of course, but if I'm making a complete character set, I always start with the morph. Untextured, so that there is nothing distorting my view of it. If I got the morph right, I can move on to other aspects of the character (texture, shaders, add-ons, clothing).
7) Is there anything you’d love to create but can’t? (and if so why?)
As mentioned earlier, I would love to be model satisfactory hair sets. My dream is to create hair using not transparency maps but hair strands made out of actual 3D polygons that can move independently and reflect light. Sadly the dynamic hair feature currently in use is severely lacking while being really heavy on system requirements, so it's not an option. I'm waiting for someone smarter than me to come up with a solution. :P
8) What so far has been your favorite product you created and why?
I have a soft spot for Hades, but I'm going to have to say Erik 2.0. I've never gotten a morph down as well as I did with that one.
9) What is the one product you wish you never made and why? (don’t be shy)
But I *am* shy! LOL Seriously though, I can't think of anything. All my products are the result of careful planning on my part, and I don't regret any of them.
10) What kind of computer do you use for your products?
One put together by my friend who assembles computers for a living. I use a Lian Li chassi, an MSI motherboard, an Intel core i7 processor, 16 GB of RAM, and an SSD harddrive along with two extra harddrives for backup reasons.
11) Any advice for those who want to start creating their own 3D products?
I know it's going to sound very cliché, but follow your heart. If you ONLY consider the commercial success part when making products, you'll tire of it pretty soon. Making 3D content isn't a routine job, you'll need a healthy portion of imagination along with technical savvy (of course) to pull it off, and unless your heart is in it, it won't work.
12) Any advice for those looking to start creating finished artwork?
Yes. Invest time in your artwork. Like every other medium, 3D is just that: a medium. The work has to be done by you. Don't just unpack finished stuff and press render. Spend time working out the light that works best, the camera angle, the poses, the expressions. The details make the whole. Never forget that.
13) With the ever changing climate of 3D what do you see as the pros and cons?
I like the variety of things you have to choose from and how easy it is to jump on the bandwagon. Something I don't like is Daz Studio's decision to basically split from the Poser community and force people to choose by catering only to the Genesis figure. It's been years since I bought anything from them.
14) What products do are you planning for the future?
Expect more celeb-morphs to surface in the near future. I'm also working on something inspired by Miley Cyrus' (in)famous naked music video!
15) Talk about your Mountain Men series, how did you come up with the idea, and what are the plans for them in the future?
I'm a huge fan of old 70's and 80's low-budget "half-retarded hillbilly" horror movies à la The Hills Have Eyes and wanted to create something remarkably different as well as challenging to myself. I have one other design in mind as far as an additional mountain man.
16) Ass hair… why?
LOL Why not? Razors are overrated. That's all I have to say.
17) You cover various niches / type of products very well, is that harder for you to pull off rather than just making one type / style of product?
Actually, no. My creative juices flow much better if I can cover as much ground as possible. Variety is the spice of life. Also, those that specialize on a single niche (however great they are) always have a risk of running out of ideas eventually. Versatility and adaptation are the key.
18) Speech time! any final words you have for your customers, fans and fellow 3D community?
Not a speech, just some basic info on me. I've noticed plenty of customers/users on here believe I'm a guy, so I feel the need to clear up some things.
