The Politics of Traynor Island:
Until 1730, Heiwakoku was ruled by an Emperor or Empress. The main island and each of the surrounding islets was governed by a Daimyo, and a Shogun stood between the Daimyos and the Empire.
The British left this system intact from 1700 to 1715, content so long as the ruling class acknowledged their masters. In 1715 the Shogun who stood between the Empire and the Daimyos was replaced by a Governor. Emperor Chikazi Ito treated it as little more than a change in official name and a move toward 'a peacefully shared government'.
In 1716 Emperor Ito was publicly beheaded by the British Empire and the citizens rebelled. The war that followed lasted over eight months and was finally ended when the General who had ordered the beheading was hung in the public square. (It's been debated for literally centuries as to whether the man—who shall remain nameless—did in fact order the beheading, or was simply a scapegoat used to end the war.)
The only other forced removal may have been that of 44 year old Empress Haniko Sasaki in 1726. She had been outspoken in her demands that the British end their "illegal and criminal" rule of the island and she disappeared between the hours of eleven pm November 13th and five a.m. November 14th. Her maid found the south window of her chambers open and a rope ladder hanging from the balcony. Her personal guards had, all four, been poisoned. There are a handful of historians who claim she fled with a peasant lover, but the more common belief is that she was kidnapped by the British and sold into slavery. (Proponents of this theory point to an "auction of diverse items of pleasure and intimate delights" which took place during a holiday party at the mansion of Sir William Reginald Bliss in Bristol, on December 24th, 1726. Among the offerings, which included aphrodisiacs, canes, sexual paraphernalia and 'the services' of various 'ladies and gentlemen', was a "...regal ivory beauty; once the haughty, imperial ruler of an island nation; now fallen, humbled, and provided for all bold and salacious entertainments and pleasures you seek..." The woman, listed in the brochure as 'Jade' was described as "...diminutive and graceful...barely 137 centimeters (four foot six)...a slim waist and hips...ample breasts, full lips and perfect teeth...long black hair to the small of her back and eyes brilliant as emeralds." A "True & Erotic Tale of a Winter Debauch", which seems to detail Bliss’ holiday party, includes a reference to 'H.S., a beautiful Orient queen...her fineries ripped and torn away to reveal her near hairless body...caned and whipped and slapped to tears...used in all sensual and sexual manner, as I shall now describe..."
In 1728 accusations were made by Governor Gottfried Hoch that the Empire had become corrupt. He accused Emperor Aritomo Hayashi of debaucheries which could well have been (and many suspect were) culled from the works of the Marquis de Sade and the rule of Gaius Caligula. The rumors swept the island and islets: auctions of peasant women and young men to visiting dignitaries, hunts in which the human prey were used as entertainment, or stuffed and mounted in a secret chamber of the palace, or cannibalized; prostitution of the Emperor’s wife and daughters; incest; the torturing of prisoners as entertainment for visiting merchants or dignitaries and worse. In the winter of 1729 Emperor Hayashi was put on trial for "crimes against the Empire". Three weeks into the trial the 'secret' fort in which the Emperor and his family were being held was attacked by over one hundred peasants. The thirty guards were killed; the Emperor and his family were abused and tortured throughout the night and executed at dawn. And Gottfried Hoch became the first Governor to rule the Islands (although he ruled for barely a year before being replaced). Since that time, the ruler of the island has been the Governor.
The Daimyos were replaced by a forty-two person Senate in 1931 and seventy 'Urban Councils' were established in 1955 as 'the voice of the people'. (And it should be stated that while sixty percent of the population remains Japanese, only approximately twenty percent of the council is Asian.)
The Commerce of Traynor Island:
In 1941 Governor Otillia Becker brought professional wrestling to Traynor Island. An avid fan from the time she was introduced to it at age twelve, Becker had an idea which would eventually change Traynor Island's economy forever: she legitimized Wrestling on Traynor Island. A Commission was formed to oversee the sport, strict rules were put in place, a committee of six elected officials was created to oversee the fledgling Traynor Wrestling Alliance and assure that every win and every loss was legitimate. The sturm and drung remained an essential part of the show. There were still shoot interviews, still heroes and villains, still stunts to sell big shows, but the matches were legitimate and interference stopped a match, might end it if it was too severe, and was punished by fines. Eleven years later, in 1952, gambling would be legalized on Traynor and TWA's reputation as legitimate, "real", wrestling would begin to grow worldwide as the fan base was allowed to bet on matches. The gambling possibilities only increased after TWA became Nexus Wrestling International, until it became possible to bet on match outcomes, injuries, management changes, interference, order of tag team and battle royal eliminations; nearly anything that could happen could be bet on at Nexus.
In 1969 TWA became Nexus Wrestling, and two years later became Nexus Wrestling International. By 1980 NWI was bringing 2.5 billion Traynor Gold Dollars (TGD) a year to the island in live show and television revenue alone. Gambling revenue directly related to NWI was 3.2 billion TGD in 1980 and revenue from tourism hit nearly eight billion TGD. As of the Nightwalker series, NWI is responsible—via shows, television, DVD, Blu-Rays and Internet events, tourism and gambling capital—for over $35 billion TGD per year for Traynor Island.
Another big revenue generator for Traynor is adult entertainment. Prostitution is legal, and licenced, on the island. Traynor offers everything from strip clubs to bordellos to live theatrical sex shows; swing clubs and alternate sex venues can all be found there, and are all regulated and inspected and kept careful tabs on by several government agencies.
Before I wrap up the brief outline of Traynor Island, I should mention The Snake Pit. The best way to describe this fight organization is in their own words. "NWI is real wrestling: The Snake Pit is real mayhem!" It started as a small "extreme" wrestling venue pushed to the limit. Chain matches, stretcher matches, thumbtacks and baseball bats, with the emphasis on brawling rather than wrestling. The ring-girls went from bikini to extreme-bikini to topless and from teasing possibilities of sex with the winners to in-ring sex with the winners. Wrestlers, managers and valets were attacked during and after matches and during interviews. It was in its third year that the Snake Pit made clear there were no rules. A caged eight-man elimination match was set up as the closing match on a Friday night 'showcase' event with three wrestlers and their manager in each corner. Visiting manager Dawn Steele (her real name, Gloria Miller), from a Bakersfield, California "extreme" wrestling organization, was left in the ring with two of the opponents' wrestlers and their manager. She was beaten, stripped and assaulted by the three men in front of the fifteen-hundred plus live audience. And that audience doubled at the next Friday event. The Snake Pit has reportedly kidnapped wrestlers from NWI and engaged in bloody beatings, assaults and three suspected murders during their shows. To date no one has been able to prove any wrong-doing, though. Dawn Steele dragged the Snake Pit to court, but a contract was produced, with her signature, that detailed her part in the 'work' that she 'participated' in. She claims the signature is a forgery, but has given up trying to prosecute. In her words "It isn’t the first time and it probably won't be the last I got screwed by professional wrestling." There are two cases that remain open for the Traynor Island PD in connection with the Snake Pit: the alleged murders of NWI wrestler Jennifer Armstrong and NWI manager Letitia Soule. Detective Hiro Suzuki of the Traynor Island PD is reportedly the latest detective to be assigned to the cases. Neither he nor the TIPD will comment on them, however.
Until later
